“Very Nice Hotel”

Just returned from a four day break staying at the Magnolia Hotel (25th - 29th October). Having trawled Tripadvisor we picked this hotel as the reviews seemed to be consistently good and we were not disappointed. This is a very nice hotel located in a good position near to the beach. From the minute we arrived we were made very welcome by all staff and 'Jess' in particular at the reception was extremely helpful.

We had a room on the 6th floor with a large balcony which gave as a good view towards the sea. The room was very well equipped and the hydro spa shower is superb, very large with a separate drying area. The room was cleaned daily and bed was comfortable with a choice of pillows available. We cannot fault the room which was very good value. My wife and I stayed on B&B rate and ate out at night. We found a great Tapas bar (Tapas Familia) which was nearby and frequented by locals which is always a good sign. Food was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast in the hotel was excellent with a nice selection of cold meats, cheeses, pastries etc and coffee was very nice.

Unfortunately, we only had one day of sun and during the remaining days of our stay we had extremely heavy rain with the streets flooding and turning into small rivers (not an exaggeration!). When the sun was out we sat at the pool which is lovely and it has a nice decking area and background music playing which was pleasant. The spa area is small but well equipped and we used it more due to the poor weather.

We used this hotel as a base to visit Barcelona, as Salou is not really to our liking (still a bit tacky) and took the Renfe train from the nearby Salou station which cost 13 Euro return per person.

Overall this hotel was very nice and caters for adults only and we would have no hesitation going back. If you are thinking about visiting Salou, then look no further than the Magnolia Hotel for a good quality hotel at affordable prices and you will not be disappointed.

“Absolutely fine.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

Pros

Good location
Adults only
Rooms clean and comfortable.
Excellent shower.
Staff pleasant
Breakfast ok

Cons

No bar area in October 22-29th, can buy drinks from reception apparently.
Boutique style hotel could be said to be bordering on youth hostel.
TV- only BBC World News and CNN (english) Which normally wouldn't be a problem as we are on our holidays but due to the poor weather and it being the end of season found ourselves having to spend long periods in our room.
No real view from balcony. Asked for sea view which we had from the side of our balcony although somewhat hidden by trees.
No hotel entertainment but plenty nearby.

Recommend

Plana bus trips, easily booked when at Salou. Great first visit to Barcelona.

The guide strongly suggested that she would take our orders for lunch before reaching Barcelona. Which mean't that we were ushered to a restaurant as soon as we got off the bus. The food arrived quickly so didn't have to waste valuable time. However I did not feel the chicken sandwhich with sml amount of chips, a sml veg pizza, tasteless ice cream and 2 soft drinks for 24 euros was worth it.

Next time we would find our own snack if we wanted any and there are plenty places in Barcelona.

Rose and Crown little pub near hotel friendly and we enjoyed the free quiz.

“Bliss!”

We live in Barcelona and have visited Salou a few times just for a rest and change. The 4 star hotels here in Salou are normally fair to poor and thats being kind. Spanish hotels these days in heavily visited tourist towns and seasons (June to September) are pretty much you get what you get. Well here is something differant. This is a new(ish) and very well maintained adult only hotel adult that is minimilist in its style and pretty classy.´Great beds and choice of pillows. We paid 58 euros per room per night with www.yeego.com for 2 adults with half board and wow! were we impressed!. We had room 602 but all the rooms are the same. However 6th floor has great views of the town and hills and from the side the sea. The reception was very friendly and speaks many languages inc English to perfection. The staff in the restaurant couild not be kinder and the food for breakfast was excellantg...... fruit meats cheese sausage and eggs etc. Also great coffee. You can eat in the restaurant or eat on the terrace ourside in the sun in the morning. Today its 27c so pretty hot. You are 200 metres from the sea front October, November April, May and June are bliss in this town and I recommend you have a week of just chilling. The gym here is small and the pool open but cold of course. The bar is closed as its winter but plent of bars nearb. I recommned hald bard and just go in chill and have some wine abd enjoy the service and food. remeber you are paying 58 euros for a large air conditioned room near the sea with half board so please don´t moan that yourdidnt receive the level of food you would receiev if you paid 100 euros. At night you can have steak tuna nice beefburger all served with veg. To start with you can help yourself to a selection of great salads variety with meat fish cheese etc and go back and have some pasta or veggies. Also main course served at your table and the pudding about 8 in total if I recall are nice but not upto the Dorchester of London or Betty's of Harrogate. Come here and chill and let your stress go dont bring your home woes as you will just get stressed and not see the kindness and pleasantness of the hotel and staff. Remember beàuty is in the eye of the beholder in more ways than one . Have a nice stay Dr Jeff Millar

Room Tip: 6th floor quiet great views and no extra to pay

“A great place to stay!”

The hotel was lovely. The rooms are very nice and spacious and very clean! The pool, jacuzzi & turkish bath were also a lovely place to chill out. The breakfast was ample to say the least, plenty of choice. It is only a few mins walk to the beach and promenade area. The reception staff were very helpful, we were there for a week and nothing was too much trouble.
Slaou was much nicer than I expected, there are the usual cheap shops but there are plenty of nice ones and loads of places to eat. We downloaded the top 10 places to eat from trip advisor which was really useful.

“Great trip - hope to return!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

We'd stayed in this hotel a few years ago and really enjoyed our trip - we were a bit worried our second trip wouldn’t live up to the first time but thankfully it did!
The rooms are spacious and clean, the showers are huge and we were lucky enough to get a room with a sea view which was a great sun trap for the entire evening.
Our favourite thing about this hotel was that its aimed at adults only, and while that may not be ideal for everyone going to Salou it was just what we were after. Pool area is nice - there is a pool bar but it wasn’t open while we were there (possibly because it was before peak season). There were very few English speaking guests at the hotel but staff were helpful and friendly. The only word of caution I'd have is that the walls are very thin - it caused us no issues what so ever while we were there but if you were unlucky enough to have someone noisy next door, it could be an problem.
The location of the hotel is great, although it is up a pretty quiet street, its close to the beach front and near bars and restaurants. It’s also close enough to walk to the Portaventura park if you don’t mind a bit of a stroll – its takes about 15 minutes to walk to the front gate of the park and saves a few quid on taxis

Overall we'd a great trip in May - weather was good and Salou wasn’t too crowded. - Also for a day trip I'd highly recommend one of the bus Plana trips to Barcelona – they are well organised and are a great way to see some of the city in a day without the stress of navigation around by yourself - their good value for money too.
