“Good in some areas poor in others”

First of all the staff at this hotel are lovely.I would not fault any of them. The food always looked nice with good selection. We stayed half board in October. The price was very good for a platinum, or so we thought. Now, I am sorry to say the bad points. This hotel is not my idea of a platinum. It all looks lovely but you soon notice how tired and grubby it is in some areas. Our room looked nice and modern but then you walk on a floor tile that is loose and broken. The shower was a good shower but the grouting was black all around. Not just black bits ALL black. Holes in the towels on a couple of days and never white. The bedding often had marks on. We wondered why no one went in the pool, so we gave it a try. Just like the shower black in lots of areas. On the last night my husband had a bad tummy upset and he was so bad we didn't think we would be able to fly home. The reception staff were lovely and tried to help. I feel bad with the bad remarks, but the hotel and travel agents need to check on them. I have been in contact with Thomson since our return. Today I received a letter saying they have looked at the photos I had sent. They said it should have been reported to the holiday advisors. They also say the hotel is 'scoring highly with customers' FOR THE PERIOD WE STAYED. I will never book with Thomson again as its been excuse after excuse. I am not saying do not go, I am just saying it is not (in my opinion) a platinum.

“Family Holiday 2011 Redressing some of the balance!”

Thought I reviewed the hotel on our return in July. Having read many of the reviews before we went, still went with an open mind and pleasantly surprised. Now revisiting Trip Advisor notice the comments vary still. We had a very pleasant 2 week stay on the 6th floor with one room significantly larger than the other, both with pool views. The rooms were cleaned well, the towels changed daily and the TV channels in English were easier to obtain in one of the rooms. The reception staff were very helpful. The bar staff were a bit indifferent and did seem to favour the Spanish residents for service. The food was very good, plenty of variety, the waiting staff were pleasant, the kitchen staff however who were replenishing empty hotplates were rude and I would agree that both of the Restaurant Managers were miserable.
It took us two days to notice where the daytime entertainment was taking place as it is round the back or side of the hotel. The daytime aqua gym was a hoot but the evening entertainment was reminiscent of Haven mainly for the kids, unfortunately the cabaret started too late 10pm we were off into Sallou by then most evenings ....and the Happy Hour should have been before supper rather than straight after....we wanted coffee after the meal ....booze before the meal! The location of the hotel was good it was far enough away from the centre of Salou so that it was not noisy but near enough to pick up buses to Portaventura Cambrils, Tarragona etc. and visit beaches, shops and bars.

We had gone abroad for the first time in 20 years and maybe it was not 4 star or platinum b ut I STILL think overall it was worth the money although with our 17 year old twin boys with us maybe we should have chosen full board as this would have saved us money overall.

Room Tip: Ask for 6TH OR 7TH floor with pool view like ours on the corner and chose full board option. Speak...

“Family Holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

This was an All Inclusive family holiday, My wife and I, 2 children 10 & 8 and my Inlaws. The hotel is very nice and the staff are friendly. The rooms are spacious as we had a family room for 4 people, a double bed and 2 singles, our bed was very hard but thats life when you are on holiday. The maid who looked after our room was shocking but the maid who looked after my inlaws room was exceptional, crazy. The food was nothing short of excellent, a massive choice for every meal time. The waiters/waitresses were very attentive and as soon as a tray was empty it was replaced. There was a varied menu as it is a multi national hotel with Germans, French, Russians, Spanish etc etc.. There was also the Polish rally team staying there at the same time as us. The entertainment team were superb with both children and adults. The evening entertainment was repetative until 9.00pm then there would be a different act on every night which ranged from acrobatics to Bands, impressive. There are 3 pools which one is indoor and heated not very big. The outside pools are reasonbly sized and plenty of sunbeds to go round. There is a health spa which children are not allowed in, marvellous for a break from the little darlings !!! The bar staff work very hard as there are lots of people there and not all are All Inclusive so they have to take the money there and then which slows the whole job down, they are impartial and it is first come first served basis. A tip is always a good thing though just in case.... The Hotel is about 5 minutes walk to the sea front where there are lots of shops and the like. We went to Barcelona Zoo on a trip which was 3& half hours at the Zoo then a short trip To Catalunya Squre in Barcelona where you were left to your own devices for 4 hours. You need all day at the Zoo really as we rushed round and did not see it all, which is a shame as it is a wonderful place. Catalunya square is just like any other main street in a big city, loads of people looking one way and walking another. You will need a big wallet as well, they must earn some coin in Spain to pay them prices and I am a slave to the label. If you are into markets, then it is your lucky day as there is one every day in the surrounding areas. There are little booths where you purchase the bus tickets and if you buy 10 at a time it works out so cheap, we went to Tarragona market on the bus and it cost us the same price for 3 of us as if we had paid for 1 via the exscursions. The beach is huge and lovely sand to boot. On the whole we were very pleased with what we got, for what we paid, I have read some of the reviews on here and I can understand where they are coming from, if we had paid top dollar then...

Room Tip: they say floor 7 is the best but they are all nice, each floor will ahve its good and bad points.

“Pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

We stayed on here on 16-09-2011 for 8 nights after being overbooked at the Jaime I.
Firstly I need to have a quick moan about the agent used by TravelRepublic (who they told us was HotelBeds). They quite clearly knew in advance that they had overbooked us but didn't bother to tell us or TravelRepublic. I don't mind relocating, even at the last minute, but a bit of courtesy wouldn't go amiss. In the end I'm glad we were relocated because the Jaime I receptionist was extrememely apathetic and blaise about the whole issue.

At first we were a little unsure about our free upgrade to four star as the building itself is very grey and uninspiring on the outside. However, once inside you could see that the foyer area had obviously had some effort put into it and the receptionist was a very polite gentleman.
The room wasn't the most spacious but it was comfortable, with free air conditioning - although the perfromance of said air conditioning was somewhat inconsistent.
It became apparent throughout the week that maids were coming in to the room several times a day as we left the beds unmade on several occasions and came back to find everything tidy and any rubbish taken away. The only issue was the lack of an actual waste paper basket. We also had a roadside view which frankly was ugly, but it didn't detract enough to affect our overall impression of the hotel.
We stayed half board and the food ranged from good to excellent. Obviously there is only so much you can do with a buffet but we found that the choice was good and that in the evenings there was a degree of variety introduced between each day. The food was also well cooked and of a good quality.
For the dinner period, the staff did insist on seating you where they chose and my only real complaint is that there are too many tables which are also crammed into a poor seating arrangement.
To a younger person, the resaurant staff themselves might come across as somewhat distant and aloof. However I can assure you that they are polite and helpful. This really did come across as a four star hotel with four star standards and that is because the staff are equally polite and no-nonsense. This made our whole stay that bit more pleasant.
There are two pools outside which were generally of a good standard, but because of the way in which the poolsides are located, you may have to vary where you sit to catch the best of the sun throughout the day.

We only had a couple of issues with our stay. The hotel is a little far from the beach and resort centre and the hotel is on a slight hill as well. It should however be noted that you are only a hundred yards or so from the train-bus stop that takes you to Port Aventura.
Also, the cost of a room safe was a joke to be honest. As travel insurance policies generally stipulate that you should use a safe for valuables, for the rates to be so excessive is a little unfair.

Overall though I would recommend this hotel. Ok it may not be of a platinum standard but if you want decent food and a generally pleasant and undisturbed stay then this will be the hotel for you. We are already looking to book this or it's sister hotel for next year :-)

Room Tip: Get a room with a pool view.

“This is not a 4 Star Hotel. Thomson rate this as Platinum must be a joke!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Stayed at this hotel in September for 2 weeks. Only now getting around to write review. As first port of call when arriving home was to complain to Thomson with a 10 page letter complete with photos. So I'll keep this short. I'm not a person to complain, but when I booked this hotel as a 4 star Platinum standard 8 months in advance, I did expect to have a nice holiday.

Arrived at reception at hotel and it looked dated but kept a open mind. The reception staff were excellent and very helpful.

Allocated room 714 on the 7th floor. As we left the lift on the 7th floor, we were greeted with sofas which would look like they fit into a hostel, they had a cigarette burns on them. The room had loose tiles on the floor. Bath towels had holes in them and were thread bare. Sink had a big chunk out of it. Bath tiles all cracked and re sealed around bath. Also on entering room on arrival it was buzzing of smoke.

While we were there for the 2 weeks, there was an outbreak of food poisoning. The food was not of a good standard, the meats consisted of pork, more pork, fish, chicken for breakfast and more pork. My partner had a bug run across her plate from the salad. Also there was some funny combinations of food there, fried eggs on a bed of some sort of spicy veg, sprouts in with lettuce and pickled onions with boiled potatoes. Bananas at breakfast time were as rare as chickens teeth.

The seated areas around the hotel were very shabby. The glass tops on tables were mostly all cracked. The chairs in the foyer, the arms well worn and discoloured. The room around the corner from the thomson rep, tables on seating area had all names scratched into them. It was more like a youth club tables rather than a 4 star hotel.

Whilst we were there the pool was stincking and not cleaned properly. Tiles missing from around the pool, mould on floor of the pool please see my photo of the pool. A wet wipe on pool floor drain for 3 days before being removed. The indoor pool be warned glass panel above you has a major crack in it possibly a health and safety issue.

The gym dont bother, nothing works treadmill you cannot decrease speed. Wires exposed from other machines. The weights machine, the only excercices you could do on machines were back and bicep. This was one of the reasons we booked this hotel because of the use of gym. I then used the one on the beach at a cost to myself.

We did complain to our rep and she did try to move us to a different hotels, but they were all fully booked. To be honest she did sympathise with us and did say there had been problems. No good to me when I've paid ex amount for my annual holiday. I did try and move to a hotel for the second week, I would have paid for it ourselves but the hotels I chose 4 Star were all fully booked. After looking around these hotels I could see what we were missing not just the appearance but the standard.

Bar staff ignorant and tried to short change customers, even to myself they tried to do me of 10 euros. The area reminded me of butlins rather than a 4 Star hotel. I know entertainment is never good. But this was terrible.

Location of hotel not good for elderly, as at night time there was a lot of muggings around the streets of hotel.

Now this might seem that I'm person that complains all the time but this far from the truth. I'm a working class person who want to enjoys nice holidays in the surroundings that have been advertised and paid for.

Will definitely go back to Salou but not stay at here. I found the Hotel Las Vegas. All those thinking of booking for the Golden Port check out the Las Vegas.
