“Great Service at Hotel La Vecchia Fonte”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2007

Great service at this hotel. After our rental car agreement made on Orbitz failed to get us a car from Thrifty/Dollar at the Olbia airport (the woman behind the desk at Thrifty didn't even care or try to help us) we called the hotel and they arranged a taxi for us for 50 Euros which was a deal considering the taxi waiting on the street wanted to charge us 75.

When we got to the hotel we were greeted by name and received a room on the top floor as requested, very nice and very clean. Even a small balcony.

English not a problem at this hotel. The hotel was quiet, the rooms very dark for sleeping, I honestly have not slept better at any hotel.

When I was sick one morning, the breakfast girl, even though she didn't speak English, gave me extra teas to take with me. I didn't even ask. It was a true gesture of kindness.

We booked on venere.com which got us a good deal at 109 Euro a night.

The only thing I didn't like about the hotel was that they had hidden extra costs...12 Euro a night to park your car, 7 Euro per person for breakfast, etc. These extras do add up. Especially for those of us unlucky with the bad exchange rates right now.

So the hotel ended up being more expensive than we thought, but they were great, so it's hard to complain.

Location of the hotel is ok. It's not seaside, but it's right near the harbor, unfortunately looks over a parking lot. But it's within walking distance of a beach or you can catch a boat to go to the islands.

Takes about 45 minutes to get there from the Olbia airport.

Try to avoid the Pizzeria near the hotel. I got very sick from eating there.

And fyi...renting a car is very expensive in Sardinia. Do it ahead of time (like we tried to do...).

“Great Hotel!”

I had business in La Maddelena and this hotel was recommended by a friend, what a wonderful place. If you haven't been, Sardinia and the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Cost) is very picturesque, everything you would expect the italian country side to be. In the spring the country side is in bloom and there is plenty to explore as you drive along the twisty roads that follow the coastline. The hotel is situated in Palua, a gateway to the La Maddelina Archipelego, where a ferry leaves for this destination every 15 minutes or so. It is a small hotel (30 rooms?) with a very friendly staff that speaks fluent english and french (due to proximity with Corsica). My wife travelled with me and we stayed in the "Classic Plus" room. It was a large room with a king size bed, and nice sized tiled bathroom with a shower. The room had a balcony that overlooked the marina with sound proof double paned french doors. They have a continental breakfast in the morning with fruit, yogurt, italian pastry's and bread and yes plenty of brewed to order cappicino and expresso. In the evening it's nice to sit out on the porch near the parlor and have a drink before dinner. There are several eateries within walking distance that I would recommend, with Cafe Du Porte being at the top of the list (don't go to Robertino's!). For Sardinia Delicacies, like roast suckling pig, you'll have to venture a bit farther. If you are looking for a spa there is one within a short drive at Porto Manno, near the famous Capo D'Orso rock. Give it a try, reasonable accomodations with a 4 - 5 star staff and stay.

“Good and bad”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2006

Good points: location excelent, hotel new and beautiful, big room with very nice furniture, staff helpful. Price (120 euros) is very good in these aspects.

Breakfast is just so so, but aceptable.

Bad point (only one): the hotel is between two bars, one of them runing by the hotel. We stayed for three nights. The first and the second were nice and quiet. The last one was horrible, with a very loud music coming from outside, it was impossible to sleep even with windowns firmly closed (I don't know if the music came from the bar of the hotel or from the other one - I didn't ask, because I will not stay in that hotel again...). So I understood why it was just us in the breakfast: such a beautiful hotel with a good price should be full, but not with very loud noise!

Besides, Sardinia is wounderful and I am sure we will go there again: if you love nature and beaches with native vegetation, that is your place!

“Family hotel, new and very nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2006

Now i stayed in Palau for 5 days. The hotel was very nice, like most within Italy. Location great, right at the port of Palau. Family run and new so all very nice. The bar had no atmosphere but i'm sure we were one of three couples staying at the time. Sardinia is susposed to be packed in the summer (may and september i would recommend)
Palau itself is very small and very quite. Most hotels seems to be resorts quite far out of towns but this is small and located central. (we like for bars and resturants) I would not recommend a stay in Palau unless your into travel. This hotel has no pool or outside seating its a base for sleeping (a very nice one) to go out for the days and walk out for the evening. A hire car is a must and travelling is required. Best beach is where all the wind surfers and kite surfers are, we went every day - beach bars etc. Its a great its called Porta Pollo very cool and just 4 mins drive. We also went to Porta Cervo but didn't think much, a bit like sandbanks on a very small and wealthy scale. I'd have to stay i prefered Alghero on the west side
