My partner, some of our friends and myself returned from a fantastic winter holiday at Chalet Roches. For our friends this was the first visit, but for us it was our second stay after stumbling across the place during the summer and vowing to go back.
We were not disappointed as if anything the experince was even better in the winter, not least because the summer accomodation is just B&B whereas as winter guests we stayed on a catered basis. Wow - the food and wine were just fabulous and quite easily of a much higher standard than you would ever normally expect in a ski chalet. We've had good food before on ski holidays but not only was this better than normal but the usual 'ropey wine' that most chalets offer instead turned out to be a great selection of quality wines which had apparently been specially selected to match that seasons menu. I see that I am not the first to praise the food & wine and that does not surprise me as it really is excellent as is everything that this couple provide for their guests. The common theme in other reviews of dedication and hard work for the benefit of guests is spot on and not only is this the case, but you leave feeling that Rebecca & Andrew gain pleasure from making your holiday as good as it can be, and you also leave feeling that it won't be long before you go back.
As far as the skiing was concerned, whilst we had been worried about the low levels of snow fall across Europe this year, we were pleasantly surprised by pretty decent conditions in the ski area which covers around 450kms of pistes - in fact although a handful of pistes were closed, large parts of the area were still very good indeed. What was most pleasing was that there was such a good variety of skiing & boarding for all levels that we all got what we wanted out of each day. 3 of us hired a guide for one day and hit a lot of hidden offpiste although according to the guide there would have been masses more during a normal snow season. and it is likely that we will return to try this out in the future. What was so surprising was the low cost of the lift pass. Most areas seem to charge €230 or more for much less skiing, but the whole area multipass (Evasion) was only €179 which is surely a bargain these days.
The town was every bit as charming in the winter as it was during the summer, and on our hosts night off we ate in 'Lou Grangi' which was very good and a nice cosy restaurant. Our favourite bar was 'La Grange' but we did spoil ourselves in the champagne bar (Pur) one night and also had a great live music night in the 'Oboose' bar.
All in all a great holiday and considering our 6 friends came with us purely based on our reccomendation it was a great relief that it was every bit as we could have hoped for, although given how well our hosts treated us the first time, we really shouldn't have worried! Rebecca & Andrew - thank you, thank you, thank you !!!!
