We have just returned from our annual skiing trip where we stayed at the Les Balcons Hotel in Plagne Belle. Having read all the reviews, we would agree in part with other previous comments however, feel we have additional helpful points to make for would-be holiday-makers.

The hotel is well situated and is exactly as described i.e. ski directly to and from the door. The ski room is heated and secure with individual lockers for each room. However, despite there being a locker for each room, there are only two seats on which to sit whilst struggling to put on and take off your ski-boots. The ski room is cosy to say the least and would benefit with being bigger. Signage (or lack of!) is exactly as previous reviews have descibed it. After a days skiing, it is frustrating to have to trudge up and down stairs trying to initially find the ski-room and reception area (one sign that was on display reported the lift to -1 out of order). In addition, you have to go completely outside the hotel and into the adjacent building in order to get to the spa area. And yes, we actually saw people tip-toeing over the ice in their robes and flip-flops in order to get to a very average pool and sauna area. You will only try this once.

The bedrooms are quite nice and the view from the 1st floor onto the slopes was beautiful. However, a word of warning, some of the 1st floor rooms are directly over the dining room and from 6am onwards, a distinct dragging of chairs and tables around a tiled floor can be heard whilst the dining room is re-organised. For those of you enjoying that last hour or so of sleep, these rooms are definitely ones to avoid. One other slight irritation (for the ladies mainly) is the absolute lack of light and mirrors in the bedroom and bathroom. We're all for eco-friendly light bulbs but the dim light in the bathroom is frustrating and any make-up is best done by the balcony window!!

One thing that is definitely worth mentioning is how helpful and friendly the reception staff are. They really are an asset to the hotel and helped us whenever they could. We even saw one kind receptionist give his own personal heater to a disgruntled guest when the heating in the hotel had broken down one evening.

Unfortunately, this cannot be said for the restaurant staff (with the exception of one young waiter who was exceptionally helpful despite being the busiest - sorry we can't remember his name!). They seemed transfixed on inputting data into computers at the expense of noticing that diners are trying to get their attention. Comments about the set meals are correct. Disappointingly, there was never any effort made in trying to put right issues with meals e.g. on two occasions meals were undercooked and no offer was made to put them right. On one occasion, a turkey roll was raw on the inside (yes, raw) and the only sentiment expressed was disappointment that we did not like it like this. Is this even safe?!?

One previous comment made regarding no english TV channels is also valid, yes, you don't expect a raft of them but one channel only (perhaps news) would be helpful. Also, there is no WIFI in the hotel.

La Plagne itself was excellent and we enjoyed the best weather this season which made up for the slight issues with some parts of the hotel.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the 1st floor but try to get a balcony view facing the Plagne Bellecote

“Great Location but limited choice of food.”

We have just returned from a stay here. I agree with other reviews that trying to get into the hotel through the carpark and up a set of stairs to a lift with luggage and skis was tricky. The location was fantastic straight onto the slopes although it was rather a steep blue, but with only one weeks skiing under my belt I did manage it. The hotel is clean, and had no complaints over cleanliness. It is a fairly quiet hotel, and you have to go out for any night life at all. if you only want to sit in front of a log fire and read in the evening then
it's fine. The breakfast was excellent but the dinner each evening was a set three courses. If you didn't like what was on the menu which my son didn't on three occasions, the only alternative was steak and chips. The waiter and waitresses English was very basic and we did have problems understanding what was even on offer to eat, and had the wrong drinks brought to us several times. However we were in France so we should have learnt some French before we went.

We actually enjoyed watching the piste bashers and were only woken by them on one morning.

I would recommend this hotel if you are a die hard skier who doesn't mind quiet evenings and you are not a fussy eater.

Although I wanted the facility of a pool and sauna I never used it as it was in the next door building. It's much better if you have a hotel where you can pop a towelling robe on and nip down to the pool.

The skiing there is second to none but we are going to try another hotel next time.

“Great Hotel and Nice Location”

Just checking out of Hotel Balcons today. I've read some of the other negative reviews, and I'm a little surprised. OK, so the hotel isn't 4 star luxury, but neither is it supposed to be. We found the hotel to be very good at the important things, but with some small room for improvement in a couple of small areas.

We checked in late on Saturday, past dinner service, but were very impressed that the hotel had kept us a platter of cold food knowing that local restaurants and shops had long since shut, and we were going to be hungry from our journey.

On our first day we did have some frustrations trying to navigate round the hotel, as there are a complete lack of signs! After a tiring day on the slopes that last thing we needed was a frustrating set of trips up and down lifts trying to find the lockers. I was fully expecting Richard O'Brien to appear telling us we were on the Crystal Maze. The entrance to the hotel is bizarre, through the carpark!

The plus points of the hotel far outweighed these minor first day frustrations. The location is fantastic, and you can genuinely ski to the door. You can dump your ski gear in the lockers, and be in your room or the hotel bar within a minute.

The rooms weren't uber cool or luxurious, but are spacious and very functional. Having a whirlpool bath is great for aching legs. We had a stunning view of the piste from our balcony. The tv was a a bit basic, with only a few channels, but lets be honest who comes on a ski holiday to watch tv?! The rooms were cleaned daily, and it was nice to come back from the slopes each day to a clean and tidy room.

The food in the hotel was excellent, particularly breakfast with fresh pastries, cereals, coffee, juices, and excellent hot food options. We ate in the hotel most evenings, and found the food to be good to excellent on each occasion. The Savoie buffet on one night was a nice idea. Service in the restaurant was faultless, even when it was super busy, all the staff had a smile. Drinks were paid for at the end of the meal, and there are a good selection of wines.

The resort of Belle Plagne is relatively small, but with something for everyone. The Village Centre has a great selection of shops, fantastic restaurants and bars.

“Better than expected for a last minute booking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2009

Taking into account the great snow we made a last minute booking - overall this was better than expected.

It is truly ski-in ski-out which was really great - the loccker was fine although no heater (not unusual) so we just took our boots to our room.

The bedroom was small but had a great balcony to sit out and watch the ski slopes from. In additon the bathroom was large and had a full bath tub which was great for relaxing those tired limbs!

Breakfast was standard continental but fine. Dinner was (as mentioned below) hit and miss and we did go outside on a couple of occassions. The service at dinner tended to be either too quick or dreadfully slow which didn't help.

Yes we would stay here again but would go for B&B not half board.

“Nice hotel on a perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2009

Despite the not so positive reviews on Tripadvisor me and my friend decided to book a room at Hotel Les Balcons for the week at the end of march/beginning of april. And we did not regret it! The room (nr 55) was clean and big enough for the two of us. The bathroom was spacious and had a jacuzzi bath in it. Our balcony (not on the sunny side) faced towards the slope running down to Plagne Bellecote. There was satellite-tv reception, but the number of stations was limited.

When we arrived on saturday morning the room was not ready yet, and would not be ready until halfway the afternoon. Unfortunately the bar was not open (opens at 5 pm), so we had to get our drinks elsewhere. The staff at the reception and in the restaurant spoke good english and were helpful. Breakfast in the restaurant was good with tea, milk, coffee and orange juice served for drinks. They also had scrambled eggs most of the days.

The quality of dinner (start at 7 or 8.30) varied from average to good with a nice variety of dishes. Quantities were okay and table water was served without asking. Waiting times were almost none existent.

The hotel was perfectly located for ski-in, ski-out, so from the ski locker to the slopes took about one minute each day. Unfortunately there was no drying facility for skiboots in the skiroom. From the hotel to the Les Arcs ski area took about 30 minutes and I think you couldn't get a much better location to cover the whole Paradiski area than Belle Plagne.
