“Clean, Warm, Friendly, Amazing food, Great service and Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

This is a catered chalet not a hotel, if you want to stay in a hotel in Verbier prepare to spend a fortune. Snowlife offer a great base to enjoy the pearls of Verbier.

I have been travelling to Verbier and staying in Snowlife chalets for 12 years. Every year I have had a fantastic time. The staff are always friendly and very helpful. The rooms are clean warm and basic with ensuite bathrooms and endless hot water. The free minibus is fantastic, the company will organise all your hire, lift passes, and lessons should you require.
The nannying service is fantastic. 9-5 allowing you to ski all day.

Ashley the owner is fair, straight talking and very generous, giving free guiding trips in the valleys throughout your stay.

“A great value chalet for skiers and foodies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

We ski in Verbier four or five times a season and frequently choose to stay at Chalet Les Pleiades in preference to other chalets in the village. The food is excellent - each time we have stayed the chefs have been restaurant-trained chefs taking a year out (rather than chalet staff who have done the standard chalet catering course).

It is a large chalet - holds 25-30 people so there are often lots of different people staying - from powder-hounds to family groups - and is well located at the very bottom of Les Moulins childrens slope - if you are happy to take your skis off for a 100m walk you can ski from the top of Mont Fort to the front door of the chalet for a large part of the season.

The accommodation is basic but it is clean and comfortable - each room has its own bathroom with huge bath as well as its own balcony, means you can have as privacy if you want and a good long soak in the bath after a long day's skiing without worrying about anyone waiting for you to get out of the tub.

It is the little things that make the big difference at this chalet - the minibus service around the resort, the free skiguiding, the availability of the rep to book you all the little things - massages, restaurants etc. For me this more than makes up for the fact that there is no roaring log fire or bearskin rugs.

If you want a fabulously decorated luxury chalet - this is not the place to go - and at the weekly prices that are charged you should not expect luxury. This chalet is great value for money in an expensive ski resort. We have already booked to go back twice in 2011.

“It is what it is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2010

Firstly Chalet Les Plieades as described here is in Swizerland not France. Trip Advisor need to amend.
There are so many reviews of this place from people who obviously have not really been to too many ski chalets in Switzerland. Lets be realistic, for what most of the moaning minnies seem to want from a chalet in Verbier they are better suited to The Lodge at £1,200 per person per night. You get what you pay for. At first glance the circa £2,300 paid by one reviewer for a family of four sounds a lot but in reality it is £82 per person per night for dinner, bed and breakfast including wine with the evening meal. Try and get that in the UK let alone in a Swiss ski resort! YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Hotels in Verbier start at about £160 a night for B&B; one B is in a small room and the other is a continental that is no preparation for a day on the slopes.
I stayed in the Chalet Pleiades and I got a clean, warm room to sleep in with an ensuite bathroom and plenty of hot water; a good 3 course dinner with wine included, a hearty English breakfast, afternoon tea and cake. The staff were helpful and accommodating. There was a minibus and driver at our disposal whenever needed. Yes compared to London the building may be considered a little insecure but then it is not in London; it is in a town where residents do not lock their doors. There was a lock on the door to my room and that is as much as one would have on a front door to an apartment in UK.
Yes it is a bit tired and no, one cannot lounge on a bearskin rug in front of a roaring log fire surrounded by leather furniture and expensive trappings ; if that is what you want go to the Lodge and pay for it. When I stayed at this Chalet, nearly all the other guests were "returners", very soon I shall be returning, with a group of friends. We know what to expect for £50 to £80 per night D,B&B. I have stayed in some of the best hotels in the world and generally try to select accommodation for purpose. When I am skiing I need a clean bed in a clean room, hot water, good food, good staff, value for money and good company. I ski for 7 hours, sleep for 9, eat, travel and prepare to ski for 3. This leaves 5 hours for other activities such as socialising and inspecting walls for chipping paint etc. What is the priority.

“A great holiday, exceptionally good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2010

We have just spent New Year at Chalet Les Pleiades and had a fantastic holiday. Whilst the accommodation is basic, it was very clean. Our room was very spacious, plenty of room for 2 adults and 2 children aged 3 & 7, and we got a fantastic view of all the firework displays on New Year's Eve. Admittedly the bathroom could have done with a proper shower, but the bath was fine. We also had the bonus of kitchen which was useful for storing snacks/milk for the children.

The food was excellent, very tasty with an outstanding 5 course meal for New Years Eve. All the staff were very friendly and helpful, they were also all very good with the children. Snowlife organised a nanny for our children, who was very excellent value (cheaper than most creches/kids clubs with other ski companies). Gemma was very flexible as the children were both in ski school, so starting work at 1pm and finishing at 7pm, giving the adults a chance for a bit of apres ski before our delicious dinner. She was also happy to babysit.

Jo and his minibus made life alot easier, taking guests to the lift and making sure everyone got to their lessons on time, helping to load up skis and poles while we were getting the children all togged up. Also on call to pick guests up at the end of the day, from wherever they may call him from. He'd then drop people off at various points in the evening after dinner. An added bonus to the holiday.

Snowlife also organised ski school for our children with Altitude, they had a fantastic time and loved every minute of it. The 3 year old skied for the morning and his 7 year old sister skied all day. Never any complaints and in fact they would have stayed longer if they could.

I would definitely be happy to return, and hopefully we will be next year. Although this was my first visit with our 2 children, my husband has been using Snowlife for the last 8 years and has never had any problems. Having now done several ski holidays with children staying in different resorts and chalet sizes, I think the chalet offers great value for money.

“A hostel not a chalet. Unsuitable for families. Dirty, unsafe and shabby.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2009

As a last minute booking at a discounted rate, we paid Snowlife Ltd £2,280 for a week at Chalet Pleiades in Verbier in March 2009. For this we expected pleasant and safe chalet accommodation.

Having arrived at Chalet Pleiades in the late afternoon and taken one look at the accommodation, communal facilites, cleanliness and security of the place, it was immediately clear that this was totally unsuitable as a base for a family ski holiday and that we would not even be able to spend one night there. Our main concern was the total lack of security but there were also problems with decor and cleanliness.

The rooms we had booked were large but dirty, with very tired and shabby decor, old battered furniture and sagging beds. There were no locks on the windows or doors to the balcony which was obviously dangerous in many respects. The bathrooms were dreadful - very basic and had not been cleaned properly - sanitary fittings were stained and dirty and there was a large pile of hair on the floor behind the door in one of the bathrooms. The rooms had the look and feel of poor quality youth hostel dormitory accommodation and the whole effect was truly depressing.

The two rooms we had booked were next to one another, with a small dirty corridor and utility/boiler room as a communal area joining them together into one 'apartment', which had its own front door. While each room locked individually, there was no lock on the door accessing the 'apartment', so the choice would have either been to lock the children into their room overnight (obviously a huge fire and safety hazard), leave their door unlocked (whereby anyone wandering in off the street through the unlocked and open front door of the building could have entered their room), or for one adult to share the children's room and stay awake all night to ensure they remained safe. None of these were viable options.

The communal areas of the building were no better. We went down a number of flights of uncarpeted concrete stairs to the dark and dingy dining room (which has no natural light), to find a group of young people sitting around on dirty and shapeless sofas, watching sport on television. The room smelled musty and was shabby and depressing. There was also a huge pile of stained sofa cushions piled up on the floor with their covers missing. Again, very like hostel or student accommodation. Indeed, it transpired that the people sitting around, scratching their heads, stretching and yawning on the sofas were staff, or friends of staff. There was absolutely no sign of this being family or child-friendly accommodation, or a professionally run ski chalet. Indeed, one of the staff told us that the only other guests expected that week were former Snowlife reps and their friends.

However, while thoroughly unpleasant and disappointing, these issues were minor compared to the overall lack of security of the place. The building resembles a hostel or block of flats, and is certainly nothing like the traditional ski chalet we had expected. The front door was open on to the street and we all wandered inside and then were able to roam the concrete corridors freely. There was no reception desk or welcome area. The corridors are lined with front doors, many of which had signs on them saying they were private. These appeared to be permanently occupied bedsits, with no connection to Snowlife. So, holiday guests must be prepared that there are unknown permanent residents staying in the same building.

We left the building shortly after arriving, to find alternative chalet accommodation. Fortunately were able to find a fantastic luxurious, warm, clean and comfortable traditional private catered chalet through a very helpful and professional Discover Verbier and Ski Freedom, for the week, for the same price as we had paid for Chalet Pleiades.

On rearranging our private taxi airport transfer from our new adddress in Verbier, we learned from the driver that we were certainly not the first guests he had come across to have been totally dissatisfied with Chalet Pleiades. Indeed, he told us that he was surprised when he dropped us there, that a family such as ours would book accommodation of that type, particularly when he had carried our bags inside and saw more of the place. This illustrates our opinion that the Chalet Pleiades accommodation is being mis-sold as family chalet accommodation.

Having found alternative accommodation, informed the chalet Rep of our decision to leave, and departed Chalet Pleiades rather abruptly, over the next few days we then sought to contact the Snowlife owner, Mr Ashley Faint. Once he had been made aware of the situation, we assumed he would have been keen to speak to us to discuss our concerns and protect his reputation. However, despite leaving both telephone messages and sending emails (which he later claimed never to have received, although of course our Blackberry records show differently), we were unable to speak to him until we were back at home a week or so later. The telephone conversation was most unsatisfactory and unprofessional, with Mr Faint adopting a very aggressive and defensive manner. Some equally unsatisfactory correspondence followed, with Mr Faint flatly refusing to refund any of our money, despite our position that the accommodation was not fit for purpose.

Since our bad experience at the hands of Snowlife, we have read TripAdvisor, and found much anecdotal evidence of other people having similar problems, both with the accommodation and with Mr Faint's attitude and approach.

By adding our story to those already existing, particularly at this time of year when people are looking to book their next ski breaks, we hope to prevent any other families making the same mistake and booking a holiday at Chalet Pleiades. If you are looking for a traditional chalet holiday in clean, comfortable and safe surroundings, with a professional and reputable company, then this is not the place to book!
