“Nice, private getaway, but not a "resort"”

For a private and quiet weekend, it was just what we wanted. The Escondida sits in the beautiful box canyon which provides a home for wildlife and a buffer to the outside world for guests. Our room was clean and comfortable but it needed some maintenance attention; squeaky ceiling fans, cracked tiles, and old towels. I think this resort could be better understood if it was called a bed and breakfast. 2 meals are served daily, except for Sunday no dinner is prepared. Those meals are preplanned and are served at prescribed times. If you don't care for this type of schedule, then you will be unhappy with the Escondida. The menu is pretty basic, but the food was tasty. A suggestion to improve this service would be to add choices of salad dressings and sauces for vegetables. My husband left the evening meal hungry each night. We did enjoy our time here, but it is not a 4 star resort like the website insinuated.

“Loved it!”

My husband and I went there for the weekend. We arrived 4 hours early, but they still allowed us to check in early. Food was wonderful. If you are not aware which we were, there is not a menu with a variety of choices for dinner and breakfast. But even without the choices the food was excellent. The portions were large, the food was homemade right down to the desert. The room was clean, staff was helpful. We had a couples massage which was great, we hiked up Medina Mountain and spent time at the pool. The pool was not full of leaves, but the hot tub was covered, because no one was using it. I was leary of this trip because of the most recent reviews, but we did not have any bad experiences. It is peaceful and quiet. So if you are looking for a weekend to relax and disconnect from your present reality this it a great place to start. We will go back again!

The pool is dirty and full of leaves, the hot tub is covered up and when you open it, it smells bad. The spa is poorly managed and over booked and people are not even allowed to converse in a normal tone of voice. My friends and I were admonished several times by one of the employees, a rather surly and sour woman who never did offer us her name. The only member of the staff who seemed to care anything about customer service was the woman who came to repair the broken towel rack in our room. I believe her name was Pam and she was friendly and helpful. The room was loud (air conditioning units, squeaky fans). We checked in and were told our room Mind you, my friends and I are 30- and 40-something year old moms, not "college girls gone crazy" or anything. There is absolutely no food offered on the property aside from what Dawn, the cook, has decided to make for breakfast and dinner. The closest restaurant is 15 miles away in Kerrville. Appetizers were ritz crackers and cream cheese with jarred raspberry chipolle sauce poured over it. Salad was some lettuce and that's all and dessert was store bought brownie bites covered with chocolate sauce and microwaved. When I complained about the food, I was yelled at by the cook. When we checked out and again expressed our dissatisfaction, we were told we acted like spoiled brats. This place was an absolute nightmare.

I've stayed in hotels all over the world. I usually prefer luxury inns like Escondida. Thank you Christy and the wonderful experience. Your resort is as good as it gets. See you again in the fall.

“I've never been treated this horrible”

Do not go to Escondido on a girls weekend! It is clear they do not want groups of ladies here and should not advertise it as a "Resort" or "Girls Get Away". The food was horrible (one choice and if you don't like what they're serving "Oh Well" - the pool/hot tub left much to be desired - and the negative attitude of the employees was unbelievable. We were spoken to, on several occasions, in a raised voice and told we were acting like "spoiled children" because we requested an alternative to the meal they provided (no I am not kidding). Also, we couldn't talk to each other in the spa without being asked to be quiet. This place is depressing and a waste of money/time.

Save yourself the trip and as the Escondido EMPLOYEE advised us at checkout - "if you wanted a place to go to be pampered with your friends, you should go somewhere else that is actually capable of providing a better experience, because they aren't equipped to handle your needs." (again, I am not kidding!)
