“I'm afraid it's going downhill for lack of investment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

KeesE, who reviewed this hotel elsewhere, is harsh but fair. Having stayed here four or five times over the past two years, i'm sadly coming to the conclusion that urgent investment is needed. Chairs and lighting are as bad as they were two years ago, bathrooms are tired, bikes are under maintained, no-one speaks English ( this is a Sheraton in the best valley within an hour of Madrid - they should!), the tennis court is cracked, lumpy and totally unplayable, the pool from 20 or 30 years ago. Javier Cortes, the regional manager, seems to reply sporadically to these reviews, but the fact is that he ought to get onto head office NOW and tell them to put up or sell up to someone who will realise the enormous potential of this hotel. My score down rated accordingly.

Dear loyal guest, thank you very much for taking time to write comments regarding the facilities and decoration of the hotel. In fact, these comments are very import to us, because we know first-hand view and feedback of our guests.
We are still in the process of continuous improvement, for example, this week we installed throughout the hotel plasma tv's 42" and 32" based on feedback from our customer in the past. I can assure you that we will do everything with reference to your recommendations. Warm regards.

“wonderful wedding stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

Beautiful rustic hotel with lots of character we stayed here for Rivas family wedding for 2 nights. Its a bit like a parador, staff were very helpful (we only speak English), room was very clean and quaint, setting was spectacular. Breakfast buffet was lovely, we also had an evening meal from the bar menu which was great, prices very reasonable. We will be back. Thank you to all the staff who worked really hard for a wonderful wedding weekend.

“No Sheraton”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

Dear Sheraton, kick this property off your chain or renovate it.
The only good experience, apart from the ok restaurant, was that we did not have to pay for our stay. Good judgement by the frontdesk staff.

This place has potential. Nice garden, great heritage building.
But the rooms are ultra small and have no airco. We booked a superior double, sweetsleeper with renovated bathroom. The bed was 140 cm. Sweetsleeper? Yes, but only as a single. The renovation of the bathroom looked like a poor do it yourself job.
The plaster on the wall was dirty and made the room like a 70s Pizzeria.

We complained about the bedsize and were upgraded to a junior suite. Indeed the bed was large. But no renovated bathroom. Holes in the wall from previous attemps to get it all work again. When using the shower, the bathroom floor becomes all wet. Happily by then the water turned transparant instead of brownish. There was a strange smell in the room. And many insects and spiders joined us. When there is no airco, you would at least expect some insect screen in the window. The space outside the window was filled with dirt, leaving a very unatractive view. The sticky old carpet could use some better vacuum cleaning.

The garden is very nice and relaxing. The pool is ok. The dressing rooms reminded me of the public swimmingpool I used 40 yeras ago. Some memory! The pool beds are just ok, but still old cheap plastic. A swim in the morning is no option. The pool opens up very late. Incoming airtraffic for Barajas airport sometimes has to wait. Guess where traffic control 'parcs' the planes.

The grounds are vast and there is plenty parking space. We were amazed that they asked a Euro 2,00 parking fee.

This hotel caters for 50 weddings a year. That is a solid weekend business. Hopefully there will be some more respect for other individual visitors. I like to return soon when management has come to their senses and converted this place into Sante Maria de El Paular, a Luxury Collection Hotel, your perfect retreat from Madrid. But it will cost some time and money.

Dear Sheraton Customer, we appreciated your valuable comment concerning the décor and physical conditions of the hotel. The hotel is part of a monument with more than 600 years old, due to that it is not easy to combine modernism and history at the same time. However we are doing a big effort to maintain our property updated. All rooms are different so next time we will reserve you a room with all your preferences. We may need more supervision of our maintenance department. I assure you the next time you visit our hotel all problems will be fixed. Thank you for caring enough to tell us.

“check which room you'll get!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

As with the last review... rooms vary from monks' cells to lovely, spacious rooms. Although some bathrooms have been renovated and seem very modern, expect sudden hot or cold surges when showering.... safer to have a bath! Location is lovely, however, with a short walk into town and very near the natural pools. The monastery is a bonus. Food is definitely a no-no at the price charged, except the breakfast which is very good. Service can be temperamental but on the whole, pleasant and welcoming.

“Monastery musings...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

This Sheraton hotel is not quite what one would attach the brand name to. Located within an old monastery, this hotel is located a few k's out of the town of Rascafria. The staff provide impeccable service with a smile, and the hotel is well equipped with a pool, bar, restaurant (food so so) and of course the monastery right next door.
The only problem lies within the accomodation itself, due to the design of the building, the rooms vary greatly in size and grandeur, mine was fantastic and huge, however others staying here had the equivalent of a monks room - book with care!
Otherwise a lovely stay for work and play, and the proximity to the river pools was an added bonus.

Room Tip: Double check what room you have gotten yourself into!
