Not the best, not the worst. We ended up in this hotel on the first night of our honeymoon, due to a combination of desperation, lack of planning, fatigue and proximity. We did not make reservations for that first night on purpose, for the sake of some flexibility. However, we did research a few possibilities before our arrival. We ended up at the NH Palacio de Santa Marta because it was the easiest one to find on our list in this beautiful, but difficult to navigate, little town.
On the bright side, the location absolutely cannot be beat! Standing at the ancient-looking front entrance, one can see the main square with the church to one side, and winding Medieval streets to the other. We loved being able stroll out the front door and right into the middle of shops, restaurants, and sights.
The hotel's building, inside and out, is beautiful and old. I didn't love the contrast of the modern decor and furnishings against the style of the building, but that is just a personal preference.
Service was decent--friendly in a reserved way, and helpful when assistance was requested. Parking was extra (maybe 10 euros/day), and required some kind of lengthy hike by my husband and the porter who showed the way. As we were leaving, we noted that there are 2-3 spots right in front of the hotel, possibly without cost (although I'm not sure about that).
The room was fine--clean, tidy, and modern in its decor. Again, not our taste, so the room didn't elicit any 'oohs and aahs' from us. The beds, as in most of Europe, were uncomfortable by American hotel standards. I was continually surprised by rock-hard mattresses, thin & scratchy blankets, and skimpy pillows at all of the hotels we visited (this one included). It's a weird thing to encounter in an otherwise luxurious environment whose purpose is for, well, sleeping.
Other assorted notes about our room...The room had one of those key card activated electricity systems, which is sort of annoying, but admirable in a save-the-planet sort of way. The view from our room was of a wall and service exit, but since we were basically there to sleep, it didn't matter to us. I do think that some of the rooms must have excellent views of the plaza, but probably on higher floors. I suspect this is something that could be requested.
The price was about 85 euros (not counting parking). Since we were traveling well into the off-season, and considering that Trujillo isn't exactly a major tourist destination, this was one of the worst hotel values we encountered on our 2-week vacation. The price might have been because we walked in off of the street, but in hindsight, I wished we had driven around for another 15 minutes as we might have found something a little better. Anyway, as mentioned at the start of this review, this hotel was neither the best, nor the worst. And in keeping with that wishy-washy statement, I'd have to say that I wouldn't recommend this place, but I also wouldn't discourage someone from staying here. If your options are limited, it will serve your needs. If you plan to book in advance, you might look elsewhere.
