“A grand resort-style hotel in need of updating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Getting to the Palmyra Beech is easy from Athens city centre by tram, although it's quite a long journey. Connections from the airport are by bus and also fairly lengthy.

The hotel itself is situated just 200m inland from the tram stop and has the feel of a traditional resort hotel. Although it's on the coast, the view from the hotel is obscured, so it's not worth paying for a 'side sea view' room. The only beach near the hotel is a fairly modest section alongside a quiet main road, so you're better off using of one Glyfada's many pay beaches as found in the guidebooks.

Hotel reception staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel room was very spacious, although rather tired and in need of modernisation. It was reminiscent of the hotels I visited on package holidays to resort destinations in the 1980 / 90s.

The small, 14" portable TV in the room featured a small selection of international channels and the room had a balcony overlooking a leafy side-street.

Breakfast in the hotel was as tired as the room. The food seemed to emerge at the first sitting and remain on display for as long as breakfast lasted. As a result, everything had a distinctly limp or stale appearance by about 9:30am.

As an unexpected bonus, the beach near the hotel has its own mini outdoor concert venue and we were treated to a series of evening music and theatre performances during our stay in September.

Glyfada itself is a decent-sized town and boasts plenty of trendy bars and restaurants catering for all tastes. The beaches aren't as prestigious as the Greek islands. Many are man-made mini-resorts with a modest admission charge, although this does get you a sunbed and decent facilities, including changing cabins and showers.

If you're looking for things to do other than soak up the sun and party then it would be worth hiring a car. There are other towns within driving distance of Glyfada and, of course, you could take the tram into Athens city centre (approx. 45 - 60mins) or down to Piraeus, from where you can take a trip to the islands.

Room Tip: Don't bother with the 'side sea view' option - you'll only see the sea if there'...

“I'd come again next summer”

Very nice location, especially for those travelling by car: free parking in the quiet street in front of the hotel. 100 m far from the beach. 80 m far from the tram stop going to the centre of Athens. Easy to reach, by car. Located in the new residencial part of Athens, with large road, modern architecture, airy area. Very nice and helpful receptionists, also offering support in organizing cruises and other touristic activities, departing by bus from the hotel. Excellent, very reach breakfast, in a modern, clean restaurant with discrete and hard working personnel. Nice rooms, not too large, a little oldish furniture and doors, but daily cleaned up, sheets and towels also changed daily. Good WI-FI in the rooms. The hotel does not have triple rooms, but theyh offer extra bed. Use junior studios in stead. Good A/C Good value for money. Clean and nice organized pool area, with bar.

Room Tip: Rooms looking to the sea are quieter. Avoid those on the main road side, which are a bit noisier. If...

“What do expect from a four star beach hotel in athens”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

"What do you expect from a four star beach hotel (Palmyra Beach Hotel) in Athens"? You know straight away when you as the guest is asked that question by the duty (operations?) manager that this is not good. The first thing to expect is that she should know the answer to her own question. For the twelve night stay a double room was booked and confirmed. On the first night having arrived in the am hours as scheduled a twin room was provided. At check out the duty (operations?) manager could not understand why there should be a problem. A discount off my next visit was offered and twenty per cent after some haggling was deducted from the first night rate.

Shortly after my return home I discovered that three days before my departure my credit card was used for a payment in a sister hotel. The credit card company immediately cancelled my card. Imagine the inconvenience that caused with scheduled payments etc. Assurances were given by the hotel that it was an error and that all credit card data is safely stored. One free night stay was offered.

There are many unanswered questions and concerns here but the irony of all of this is that the Alpine Center Swiss Business School for Hotel and Tourism Management Education in Greece is based in this property. I wonder would I get an introduction fee?

“Good enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

The hotel is OK. No major issues with service, though somtimes the bartender would disappear (I guess this was due to how slow it could be), and at breakfast some food items would run out quickly and not be replaced frequently. It's a clean hotel. The rooms are slightly dated, but come with good A/C and are a decent size. TV was pretty old and small, though we didn't spend much time in the room. The bathtub also seemed a bit dangerous as I felt that I could easily slip. Liked the empty mini fridge in the room so I could store beverages and snacks. The pool was pretty good. Beach and tram are about a five minute walk. Bars in Glyfada are a bit farther, but totally within walking distance. Airport transfer was good at €9/ person.

Room Tip: Request one looking out towards the beach. The opposite side is next to a very busy road.

“Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

The hotel was located close to town and the beach. Although not a luxury hotel, value for money made it a great choice. Rooms were clean and spacious. Pool clean and tidy. Did not really enjoy the food. Staff were extremely helpful. We stayed 11 nights and would go back.
