“Nice, quiet hotel on the lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

I was there in November and the hotel was practically deserted. I suspect the action is in and around Hotel Casa Amelia where I had first thought of staying. But I'm glad I didn't--it's a pretty busy area and I like quiet. This hotel provided me with just the sort of peaceful envirionment I was looking for. I was in Room 305 with a balcony overlooking the lake. The room had modern furnishings, AC and a ceiling fan. No complaints. I was up at dawn and saw a great sunrise.

Flores is a small town, cut out for backpackers heading to Tikal. It takes only a few minutes to walk around it. One day is plenty. I had dinner at family-run Cool Beans.

“Nice hotel for the money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

I stayed here once and have no complaints at all about the service there. Their rooms have a/c and are simple. The price is very good as well. I would definitely recommend it to others.

“As a Springboard to Adventure.. It's Alright”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 April 2011

I've got to preface this review by level setting on expectations... In traveling to Flores, I was looking for a cheap place to hang my hat for my foray into Tikal National Park... the Hotel Villa del Lago, providing basic accommodations, lived up to those expectations... though the staff represented a bright spot.

Flores, Guatemala is an old colonial town set upon a supremely walkable island on Lake Peten Itza. The town retains much of it's colonial flavor with narrow cobble stone roads and red-roof block buildings set one upon another. Located at the bend in one of the main interior roads, the Hotel Villa del Lago is perfectly representative.

The hotel's location was ideal, having a common deck that looked out onto the island's promenade and the serene lake. An early riser, I treasured seeing the sun break from behind the distant hills to light up the lake.

The hotel has an aged feel. Rooms have frosted louvers opening onto open-air hallways. Offering a deadbolt and throw latch on the doors, I felt reasonably secure.. though the room safe was a bit awkward to use and could be easily opened by hotel staff... You're not going to bring valuables to Flores.

As mentioned by others, noise intrusion is a fact of life at the Villa del Lago.

Furnishings were basic, showing the character that comes with age and use. Still, bed linens were clean, and rooms were equipped with cable television, fans and air conditioners. Bathrooms offered the basics with plenty of hot water.

The staff was very accommodating, answering my questions, suggesting venues and providing guidance as to what would be reasonable to pay for dinner, rides and tours. They were particularly helpful in getting rides to the park and airport.

As a low cost alternative in an old colonial town, the Hotel Villa del Lago lived up to expectations, providing adequate accommodations at a great price... it''s a good, basic waypoint for journeys to Tikal or Antigua.

“Very very satisfied”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2011

My Guatemalan friend and I (68 year old male) traveled to Flores to visit the Mayan archeological sites at Tikal and the more recently opened Yaxha. We arrived at the hotel around 5:30 AM after traveling to Flores on the overnight bus from Guatemala City. Our room was on 2nd floor, at the end of the open-air corridor leading to a spacious patio overlooking the lake. Most of the rooms are arranged along this type of corridor. The vantage point from the patio provided a spectacular view of the sunrise over the lake. Beautiful! Our room was not large, but it was well furnished with 2 double beds, side tables, desk/dresser, a rack to hang clothing, a safe, TV, ceiling fan, and a quiet, efficient air conditioning unit. It would have been difficult to accommodate a lot of luggage in the room. Everything seemed clean and well maintained, the beds were quite comfortable, and there was ample hot water in the private bathroom. If we had to spend a lot of time in the room then it might have felt somewhat cramped, but if we had had more time we would have enjoyed using the patio, with it's pleasant breeze and beautiful vistas. As mentioned by another reviewer, there is a potential problem associated with the louvered, frosted glass windows in the wall separating the room from the corridor. (Most of the rooms have this kind of window configuration.) The windows provide some natural light for the room, but they do very little to block or diminish any sounds, so, while it was not an issues during our visit, in some situations this could definitely be a problem. The hotel's location is excellent, because everything in this island town is within a 10 or 15 minute walk. Flores itself seems more like Key West than it does more typical Guatemalan towns. Hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and tour agencies abound. The adjacent mainland town Santa Elena, also has many hotels and other tourist-oriented businesses, but it is much more oriented to providing goods and services to the region's population. I can't offer many comments about the staff because we didn't have much interaction with them. That which we had was pleasant but business-like and quite satisfactory.

A comment about the bus from Guatemala City to Flores, we used Linea Dorada, which offers a high-end Pullman bus service . We had missed the earlier, slightly more expensive bus that departed at 9:00 PM so we took the later, but cheaper, 9:30 PM bus. That overnight trip was very uncomfortable for me because of the rather cramped seats and leg-room (my height is about 6'). It was impossible to get comfortable enough to sleep or rest well. So when returning to Guatemala City we took the more expensive service (it's about $7 more) and it was definitely worth the few extra dollars, providing a snack for the trip but, more importantly, considerably more personal space, with seats that recline to a more comfortable sleeping position and room for a taller person to stretch out their legs. Incredibly, I actually got a good nights sleep on the bus. As they say...Priceless.

“pleasantly surprised”

I stayed here for one night after coming back from a fabulous stay at a hotel in Tikal. We had a very early flight from Flores airport back to Guatemala, and I must say that I really did not expect very much. I just wanted somewhere to sleep because I was tired.

The first room we were given was a bit small but after I asked for a bigger room, they gave us one with a private balcony which was fantastic. We really lucked out!

The hotel was clean and comfortable, the price was fair. The rooms could have been bigger but given the limited space on the island, what else would one expect?
