“Basic room, nice pool, possible food poisoning?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Our room was sparse but perfectly fine, lovely view of lake, nice balconey, no real complaints (except it was the only accommodation on our Caravan Tour that did not supply shampoo and other basic toilletries, but I had some so no problems there.), We knew in advance it wasn't equipped with TV or Internet, etc. so my husband was bored and I read a book! Had a lovely swim on arrival, buffet meal, early bed due to early Tikal tour. I was violently sick all night (double enders), am guessing food poisoning from buffet but who knows? No one else on our tour got sick, so I can't say for sure it was the buffet, but the timing is a bit suspicious! Anyway, I recovered enough to thoroughly enjoy Tikal the next day, but was a little under the weather for the rest our our tour (another couple of days..) Jorges Fuentes, our tour director, was fabulous, had some over the counter cures I would have found difficult to find on my own.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper level room in one of the "Quads" - I think the view is probably better.

“Exotic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

the hotel is exotic. While the rooms are average but clean, the grounds are wonderful, in the middle of a jungle with birds and crocodiles in residence. The food is very nice. The out of town location provides for a quite stay after a long visit to the ruins. The pool is great and so is the service. Many tour groups stay there as well.

“One of the best we stayed in”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Right in the rain forest with wildlife around. Do spare the time to walk around the like early in the morning, if you are lucky you can see monkeys, crocodiles etc.

“Could have been much better, but because of setting I gave this place 4* overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

The hotel is actually a set of various types of bungalows spreading alongside the lagoon where you can hear incredible jungle sounds (most prominent are ubiquitous howler monkeys). If you are lucky enough, you can take a picture of a roe feeding outside the fence or a crocodile resting on a lakefront. So you'll forgive this place tired and worn rooms (at least in double bungalows), but I just couldn't stop wondering that Villa Maya could have been so much better if they invested in a decent refurbishment. So there are rooms where you get inobtrusive split type aircon with remote control and there are others where you get noisy through-the-wall type aircon with no remote whatsoever. I have to mention the honesty of staff as I forgot my brand new SLR camera with 2 lenses and other equipment at the reception in the evening and guess what - it awaited me at the reception desk in the morning. The receptionist also refused a tip - so this is kind of THANK YOU again. For internet addicts - there is approx. 2 Mbit/s FREE wi-fi in the reception area, which is nice bonus. So to sum it up - try Villa Maya, it is something different, away from town of Flores. The beautiful location will outweigh certain flaws of the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for room in 4-room bungalows as they are partly refurbished and overall better than double bunga...

“with the crocodiles”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

Fantastic setting; at breakfast we sat on the restaurant balcony and watch the crocodiles coming to the bank of the lake to be fed. Room damp and cold but otherwise comfortable, no coffee, tea, TV or bathroom toiletries and too dark to read a book in bed. Half board is based on a minimalist, limited menu. Female receptionist not particulary helpful and irritatingly changed our departure arrangements made earlier with her predecessor. Children's behaviour was particularly loud and unconcerning for others. All that said, we would specially recommend this hotel because of its location on the lake, the new accommodation and beautiful setting - but ask for a room facing the lake. Morning and evening crocodile feeding by the restaurant staff should not be missed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lake front.
