I've stayed at the Gage Hotel twice before, and found it to be a quaint oasis in the middle of nowhere. I recently accessed their site to make a one-night reservation for a Thursday night, only to find a "Holiday Special" king room for $97. Thinking they were affected by the economy and were selling their great rooms for reasonable prices, I grabbed a one-night reservation, for a king room at the "Historic Gage Hotel". Imagine my surprise, when, upon check-in, we were sent to an old B&B down the street! Furious, I demanded to know why they were putting us here. The response? The Gage had just purchased this old B&B two weeks before, and were renting rooms in it PRIOR to fixing it up. It had absolutely none of the Gage's charm. We were put in a room on the second floor...no lights on, we were stumbling upstairs in the dark, and there was no heat. (It was in the low 30's outside). No phones in the entire building, so we had to bundle up and go back to the Gage to request someone get up there to turn on heat and lights. The building is old and every step creaked and echoed throughout the building. Absolutely no privacy in the bathroom due to noise! When I opened our bathroom door, both door handles came off in my hand. So...you couldn't close the door or you'd not be able to get out! There were screw heads sticking out all along the wall where something had been hung, and one had to be careful to not touch the wall for fear of getting scraped. The bedspread was a cheap ugly thing and there was absolutely no decor of any kind that reflected the Gage Hotel. We were told that they were going to get their architect or decorator to come do an assessment in the future. Evidently, we were going to help pay for the update, however it should NEVER have been rented out! The furnishings were sparse at best. Motel 6 is a better place to stay and we would have moved, if possible, however, there aren't any other hotels in Marathon, so they've got you. There was not even any coffee...you had to go back to The Gage to get it in the morning. We feel totally ripped off, and do not appreciate the bait 'n
switch game played by The Gage. In our opinion, it is no longer the class act we thought it was, and in the future, I guess we will stay in Alpine on our way to Big Bend.
