The setting: Labor Day weekend, Bolivar Penninsula way down on Crystal Beach, (past the water tank) 12 noon until 6 p.m., high winds and blowing sand. My wife and I were covered with grit, the food was covered with grit, our gear was covered with grit, but we had a BALL! We began to make a few impromptu calls seeking lodging for the night, ..oh, yeah, did I mention it was Labor Day weekend? All Booked! We decided to get off the island and head north toward Kemah. The closer we got, the less likely it was that we would find accommodations ... and there it was, "Super 8", but "Americas Best Value" is first off of the freeway ramp. The counter dude was fast, and we were in our room within 15 minutes. The half-suite was clean, and the outside area was quiet. The view outside our door overlooked the pool area, and the view outside the window overlooked a rolling field. The individual AC unit was quiet and responded well when I cranked it to 62 degrees. The shower pressure could have been higher, but there was plenty of hot water and it felt goood to de-grit. Ask for room #231, it is situated next to a central security exit and the only neighbor you can have would be in the half-suite next door. I was very satisfied with the room itself, but ... (and you know there had to be a but), my wife said she could smell smoke in the bedspread of our non-smoking room, her iPad would not secure a strong enough connectivity link to the facility's wi-fi network so we had to use my cellular as a portable 'hot spot'. My issue was the continental breakfast. Let's put it this way, a hotel filled with vacationing families with kids and a waffle maker. Better get there very early to get your waffles because in the next hour there will be children everywhere! My wife and I decided to stay a second night and got the Sunday rate ... COOL! The Inn's pub was a good selling point too. A strip center in front, "The Mall of the Mainland" across the freeway, and WalMart and a host of food places one exit north. Yes, it was an oasis for me, and I will be back.
