I stayed at the Hawthorne Suites in Killeen, TX, in September, 2009, while working at Fort Hood.
My very first impression was the smell of mildew throughout the building. This hotel is a smoking/non-smoking combination hotel, so the non-smoking rooms are adjacent to the smoking rooms. Also, the non-smoking rooms were probably all smoking rooms because the smell still lingers - along with the mildew smell.
My second impression was the cutesy cricket-themed note on the table telling me it was cricket swarming season and the hotel does its best to control them but...
My third impression was the broken, filthy recliner in my "living" area, and the sofa also appeared dirty. I took a spare blanket from the chest of drawers to spread on the sofa and discovered a large, dark stain in the center of the blanket.
I literally took Clorox wipes to the entire room before I felt I could touch anything. The bathoom sink was old, cracked, and stained, and the decor was pretty much as it had been when the place opened in the 60's or 70's. The only good thing was the size of the room; it was large. The kitchenette area was small, lacked storage space, and there were no utensils - they were available from the front desk.
I did not select this hotel but was placed there by my company at the government rate. I requested to be moved to another the following day and was very happy to leave. I would advise anyone traveling to Killeen to avoid the Hawthorne Suites. You would do better at the Marriott Residence Inn or the Fairfield Inn.
