Stayed here for a week on a business trip because of the location and the king sized bed since my wife was with me on this trip. I wonder if the generally good Tripadvisor ratings for this place are still deserved. They have changed the name to Hyatt House now. Maybe it is under different management.
First the good news:
The room was well furnished with a full kitchen, a very nice microfiber sleeper sofa/sectional, a functional desk and desk chair, a good sized flatscreen TV and a king-sized bed. The AC was working fine. The room was facing the George Bush Park and was generally free of road noise. The breakfast included sausage and eggs, various breads, yogurt, fruit, cereals and various juices. The General Manager, maids, and breakfast room staff were very friendly. The bed was comfortable, although the sheets and duvet kept coming un-tucked.
Now the bad news:
The floors are apparently very thin. We were awakened by very heavy footsteps of people walking back and forth for 40 minutes above our room (we were on the second floor). This happened a couple of nights until the folks upstairs moved out. There was a loss of electricity for a few hours (no storms in the area, not sure what that was about). There was also a fire on our hallway, which forced full evacuation for a few hours. There was also a large tow-truck left running under our window for an hour or so when we were trying to get to sleep. We asked the front desk for two things: a) to be moved to 3rd floor room after we were woken by the folks upstairs. The 'tried to help' for two days, but kept saying to check back later. Never did find a better room for us. b) we asked for a late checkout on the last day so that my wife could stay in the room while I finished work. The front desk clerk said that we could stay until 2pm, no later. Any later and we would have to pay for an extra night. I said, OK, 2pm is is then (wife not happy). The next day we reminded the same clerk that we would check out at 2pm and she said 'No. We are expecting a large number of guests so unfortunately the regular check-out is 12pm.' We spoke to the manager who told us that it was fine to check out at 2pm. So, my wife shows up to sit in the lobby at 2pm and the manager sees her and says, 'Oh, you can stay in your room. Its OK.' So, back she goes to the room.
The decor in the rooms is getting old. The carpet is wearing out and the bathroom sink cabinet is looks like it is painted-over particle board, which was coming apart. (The sink and shower were in good shape, however.)
All-in-all, this was a very mixed experience. I plan to return to the nearby Towneplace Suites if I need to stay in that area in the future.
Room Tip: Try to get in the back building, facing George Bush Park, on the third floor. Don't ask the fro...
