“not bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2008

We stayed for two days. Its nothing fancy but it was clean and quiet. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. Towels are cheap so bring your own. You basiclly get what you pay for. If your looking for a place to stay that wont break the bank, very close to all beach activities, this is it. I didnt see any bugs, the place was clean out side and inside. If you want to be catered to and have all the fancy adminities dont stay here. The staff is very friendly. Definatly would stay there again.

  • Liked — The price was very reasonable and the only pet friendly hotel
  • Disliked — lack of amenities

have you seen the movie 1408??? I would have rathered stay in that hotel room than any room at the reef resort!!! And that was a port hole to hell. At first it looked like a really nice place. The lady at the front desk was very nice and we had a nice conversation.we went to our room that was on the 2nd floor. As soon as we walked in, it had a nasty musty smell. You can tell they were old apartments, we went to the balcony and there were two joints lying on the ground! We went back inside and there was crumbs and trash behind the couch and the tv didnt work. We left for the night and came back around 11. The little lobby was just plain creepy and I was expecting to get jumped any minute! We went back to the room and our door was unlocked!!!! We know it was locked when we left!!! Nothing of our stuff wasnt missing thankfully! But all of the chairs in the dining area were scattered around the room (one in the living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom). We put our hot drinks in the fridge when we first checked in and when we got back a lot of the drinks were gone and everything was hot!!! We tried calling the front desk but surprise, surprise the phone didnt work!!! Finally we just decided to go to sleep. But of course, our sheets had black stuff all over it!!!! Thankfully my husbands aunt and uncle were staying at the San luis hotel so we slept on the floor in their room!!! Which is where you really need to stay!! The next day we went back thereto check out and this really rude woman just told us "sorry"
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!

  • Liked — all rooms had a balcony overlooking the beach
  • Disliked — Worst place I have ever been to in my life!!!

“Internet Looks Can Be Deceiving”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2006

I stayed at the Reef with my mother 6-7-6-12-2006 and the accommodations are terrible. We we arrived the furniture in our room had foam coming out of it and ants had built and nest in it. The stove only had one burner working and maintenance never came to fix it even after a work order was put in. There are so many things wrong with the place I dont know where to begin.

The pool has a public entrance and the locals come and hang out at the pool and take it over. The maintenance lady was carrying around a 24 ounce Bud Ice while working on the grounds. They did remove our couch and gave us the one in the lobby. We made several complaints to the manager and nothing was done. One evening about 12:00 a.m. a rock was thrown at our sliding glass door. There is no housing keeping or they just dont clean your room, my mother got the vacuum from the manager and did it herself. They ran out of toilet paper and coffee. There where so many children running wild that the elevator broke and was not fixed when we where there and the lobby closes at 11:00 p.m. and locks up and there is not an immediate exit because the pool is locked from he outside...so basically we had to go all the way down the complex down some stairs to get out. If there would have been an emergency there is no telling what would have happened because after 11:00 there is no one available that works there just a pager #. I know there are other things I just cant remember them all.

My mother called the corporate office in Addison, TX and they had the manager from the reef call her which did absolutely no good what so ever. Some one really needs to check this place out. I think the employees and their families stay and run throughout the place. I mean when you pay close to 1000.00 you would think it would be a pleasant place. Look at their Web-site it is very deceiving...it looks very inviting but not at all what it is actually like.

“Disqusting experience at The Reef”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2006

My husband I and our 2 small grandchildren spent two nights at the Reef and if I had had any other options for housing I would have taken them. The place is disqustinly filthy and worn out. When we first arrived we attempted to walk out on our patio and couldnt get the door open enough to do so. So we called maintenance and got quick response - but still the door was a chore to open. We were never able to open the patio doors from the bedroom. But after walking out on the patio, my husband walked over to the outside storage - just out of curoisity - to see what was in it - and the door fell off the hinges. The loveseat (there was no couch) was so filthy we didnt want to sit on it. The kitchn was very sparsly furnished. The refrigerator freezer had a hole in the bottom of it and there werent even any ice cube trays!!! And no complimentary ice provided by the Reef! The shelve above the drawers in the refigerator was also missing. The only positive thing I can say about The Reef is that it has a lot of space. And it is a shame to let such a property in such a great location get in this condition. This place is a disgrace to Galveston Island and should be torn down or told to clean up their act. It makes me sick to think what I paid to stay here. My advice to anyone is to pay the little extra and stay in a decent, clean, well appointed place and not ruin your vacation. I reget I didnt take photos to post with this review.

“Don't Be Fooled”

We went to The Reef Resort for our first visit to Galveston, TX for the Memorial Day Weekend We chose that place as it was the only place that would allow dogs and it looked very nice on their website. Some might be saying that the fact that they allowed dogs meant it was not a very`clean place though we've been to others that have managed just fine.

As soon as we walk in and I have to go to the restroom, I'm met by a dead cockroach next to the toilet. We call the front desk to let them know and they just can't believe it, so we have them come pick up the roach. The lady told us that they just had the pest control guy come and spray as a preventative measure so that's why we saw it. Excuse me, but they sholuld have been preventing all year round, not just for the start of summer. That was just the beginning.

Other problems we encountered were more dead bugs, maids that don't vacuum or pick up the trash( their excuse that it's a new maintenance staff), dirty dishes, and a broken water heater.

For 3 nights with the pet deposit we paid $450, they were nice enough to refund us $50.

On one positive note, all the front desk staff was very helpful when it came to giving us suggestions on what to do around Galveston, and we did have a magnificent view of the ocean albeit in a dilapidated suite
