“Nice 2-day stay but would we come back? Don't think so.”

We were in a desperate need of a break from our hectic job/school combos in Houston, so we booked Guadalupe cabin for two nights, 30 and 31 Dec. Since one of the nights was the New Years Eve, the total bill came to $450. Though Cotton Gin Village is defintiely a nice place, I don't think it justifies $225/night.
Pros: The place is authentic enough to enjoy that old Texas ambiance, exotic to both of us, non-Texans. Fredericksburg's Main Street, pretty and all lit up with Christmas lights, provided plenty of opportunities to window shop and people watch. Proximity of the Enchanted Rock Park and several wineries gave us something fun to do. We tried the restaurant on premises and, as we are both meat lovers, left happy as our both filet mignons were nice and cooked to perfection. $115 was adequate for two really nice appetizers, the abovementioned filets, a dessert to share and two glasses of wine - not cheap but adequate.
Cons: it was COLD (for TX, at least, +5C), so we were looking forward to that roaring fire in the cabin's fireplace. Problem is, the wood available outside of the cabin was obviosuly damp after recent rains, and despite of my fiancee's best efforts (someone who is used to building fires as he grew up in the house kept warm by the wood burning oven!), the fire was small and died after an hour max... and then the cabin really strongly smelled of smoke. The smell didn't tick me much but it would have been nice to have a real fire... Also, in their review someone mentioned "luxury bedding and towels". Not for us. The bedding was rather old, and bath towels so worn out (was that a reason?) that they reached the stage of only semi-soaking water off one's body. This is not something I would expect when paying $225/night. Also, thanks God that we were after so much needed sleep as Highway 16 provided its fair share of road noise, even at night.
To sum it up, the place was nice but would we comeback? Not at that price tag.

Thank you for taking the time to place a review of your stay with us. We are certainly sorry to hear that your stay was not as satisfying as it could be and would like to address the issues you had during your stay.

As far as our lodging rates, value is definitely relative to an individual’s means, but we do offer lower rates during non-peak periods. In fact your rate was $179 the first night and $215 the second (being New Years Eve). Weekday rates are even lower and we also offer military and AARP discounts. We have never charged a rate of $225, so I am not sure about that.

One of the most praised amenities we provide our guests is the large rock wood burning fireplaces that we supply firewood for. It is truly memorable to sit in front of a crackling fire in these 1800’s log cabins and reminisce about a time gone by. We are sorry you missed out on this opportunity, but we do keep our firewood in a covered storage and provide fire starter bricks as well. We are always happy to help any of our guests that have difficulty starting their fires. Just let us know!

We do provide high quality bedding and towels and are sorry that this was not reflected during your stay. Unfortunately we discovered directly after your stay that we were having issues with the chemical mix in our laundry department. This chemical imbalance was leaving the towels and such, feeling dry, scratchy and not fresh. We have resolved this issue.

We would certainly welcome the opportunity to have you stay with us again, perhaps on a weekday when we offer discounted rates. And keep in mind, we will be happy to help with the fireplace. Once again, thank you for providing your insight.

“Do Not Stay Here!”

What a horrible experience we had at this place! My husband and I booked the Rio Grande cabin for the weekend of December 16th for our 18th wedding anniversary. On Saturday, December 17th after returning from shopping in Fredericksburg we discovered that our toilet was not working properly so we called management. The owner came and tried to repair the toilet, but in the process only made it worse. He carried buckets of toilet water outside and poured them on the ground. After he left to call the plumber, we walked back into the bedroom to discover that the jacuzzi tub was filled with raw sewage. The owner told us before he left to use the restroom facilities at the restaurant. He wanted us to stay in a room with raw sewage sitting in the jacuzzi tub right next to the bed! So, if you visit this establishment, beware the Rio Grande cabin. We left immediately and had to leave Fredericksburg because of this! Our entire romantic getaway that we had planned since Sepetember was ruined. The owner should be ashamed of himself for telling his customers to stay in a cabin and be exposed to hazardous waste. He would only give us a partial refund; I requested a full refund; and actually argued with us about this whole nasty situation! Not something I wanted to deal with for my anniversary! So, customers beware of this establishment!

Being one of Fredericksburg’s premier lodging facilities, it sincerely saddens us when one of our guests has a less than positive experience while staying here. We stake our reputation on being able to continually provide an upscale lodging and dining experience as outlined by the majority of our guests who enjoy the services we provide. Unfortunately, from time to time we suffer mechanical malfunctions like any other lodging property. While we never want these issues to impact our guests, when it does happen, we make it a point to respond as quickly as possible. As in this case, within 30 minutes of hearing about the issues our guest was having in their cabin beginning on the second day of their two night stay we were attempting to try and resolve the problem. When we discovered that the non-waste object this guest lodged in the plumbing line was beyond our reach with the tools we had at hand we did inform them that we would need to contact a plumber to remove the obstruction.
We are fortunate enough as a business in a small community to have developed an ongoing professional relationship with one of our local plumbing services to respond to our calls quite quickly during “off hours”. And while it took less than twenty minutes for the plumbing service to return our call, this particular lodging guest was in the lobby demanding a refund for their “entire” lodging stay without allowing us the opportunity to resolve the issue.
While we would never expect, nor require a guest to stay in any of our lodging units if the cabin has issues related to plumbing, air conditioning, electrical or such that we are unable to fix, we do ask for the opportunity to resolve the issue in a timely and professional manner. We were attempting to do everything we could in this particular instance, and find it a quite un-fair to review us in a sense that does not reflect our complete and total concern for the incident. We would certainly have apologized for any troubles and provided appropriate lodging referrals had we not been able to resolve the issue, but we were simply not afforded the opportunity to do so.
We respect all of our guests and fully understand our responsibility as inn-keepers to provide a clean, safe and warm environment, and that is exactly what we strive to do on a daily basis without hesitation.
As this guest noted the first day of their stay was “fine” and it was not until the second day that the issue occurred. We did refund the second day stay even though we were not given the opportunity to resolve the issue.

We rented the Rio Grande cabin for two nights. On the second day our toilet became stopped up and we called the manager. He came and tried to fix it. It backed up into the jacuzzi tub. He told us that he would call a plumber and we could use restaurant restrooms. We were expected to stay in a cabin with raw sewage in the tub and no restroom facilities. When we spoke with the owner he was very rude and never apologized for ruining our weekend. He refunded one nights stay when we asked for a full refund. We had to leave Fredericksburg because of this. If you visit the Rio Grande cabin just remember that raw sewage was sitting in the jacuzzi tub and if you have a problem don't expect the owner to help you. I only wish I had taken a picture so
everyone could have seen the tub. So nasty.

“Cosy Hill Country Cabin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

We stayed at Cotton Gin in the Pedernales Cabin for two nights at the end of November.

The cottage was spacious with a lovely, comfy leather sofa in the living area. There was a DVD player, CD player/radio and the best TV we've had whilst on holiday in the States!

There was a dining table and a small kitchenette with a microwave and fridge. Cereals and pastries were provided for breakfast and were replenished daily. Tea, coffee, milk, fruit juices etc were provided too.

There was a celing fan in the lounge area and heating/air con in both living area and bedroom. There is also a fireplace in the living area and firewood was provided free of charge. The bed was not as high as we had expected from some of the other reviews.

There was free wi-fi in the cabin - this was an unexpected bonus!

The Pedernales cabin was situated in a good location within the plot, towards the back, and away from the car park - there are about 6-7 cabins set out around a small pond and seating area. Each cabin has it's own decking, with a double rocking chair and small table and chairs.

Cotton Gin Village is about 2 1/2 miles from the centre of Fredericksburg. There is a fantastic onsite restaurant, the Cabernet Grill and Restaurant - see our separate review for this. Cannot recommend it highly enough. The steak was delicious!

Would love to return to stay at the Cotton Gin and would definitely recommend it for a relaxing break or as a good base for exploring the Hill Country.

“Lack of response”

It's a shame when businesses provide no replies to potential customers while offering an email contact for convenience. It shows a lack of professionalism and furthermore provides an insight to the potential of customer service. The previous review regarding the lack of good management seems about right even when I haven't stepped foot onto the property. First impressions are key. If the availability is not there; please reply and say so.
