Unless you prize flexibility or isolationism over reasonability and practicality, there is really no reason you should not stay at the Hudspeth House as opposed to any of the other hotels in Canyon, TX. Here's why:
1.) You will stay in a clean, beautifully furnished and decorated room which has literally been hand-crafted in nearly every way. That is to say: you will see and feel comfort in the best possible way. You may want to take more pictures of your temporary residence, its grounds, and your room than anything else in Canyon, TX! (I know we did.)
2.) The value of your stay is, to say the least, a great deal. Not only do you get what you pay for in a good night's sleep: you also get a wonderful hot meal, delicious tea and cookies at check-in, a fantastically relaxing front porch complete with rocking chairs and a porch swing, and very courteous and personalized service from a decent and respectable family.
3.) Every modern convenience is available just like in a hotel (HVAC, free wifi, refrigerator, filtered water, iron, sundries, toiletries, door locks & keys, etc.). They even have desks with three-prong electrical outlets for your laptop (really quite a surprise in such an old place).
It should be noted that breakfast is at one time, and one time only: but if you let the owners know ahead of time they will give you some baked goods to take with you in the morning. Breakfast will likely last a good half hour since it is served in courses. You will probably eat breakfast with other people in a beautiful dining room glowing with morning light, served and blessed by the owners. If you are a vampire or otherwise afraid of light, extremely atheist, anti-monotheist, or just anti-social to the point where you can't sit at a table with others: you may want to consider other options.
The owners are very willing to accommodate food allergies, lighting preferences, special needs, drink choices, etc. if you just let them know in advance. Jill and Van are great hosts and you don't want to miss a stay at their house!
Room Tip: I highly recommend the Hudspeth Room, and can't really speak for the other rooms.
