My husband and I visited Richmont Inn for a long weekend recently. The location is wonderful, very scenic and rustic, all of what you would want for a mountain getaway. The area offered some very nice and different restaurants. We had read reviews on the Inn, which were very mixed, but because it was listed in the Select Registry and we are never disappointed in their choices, we decided to give it a try. The long drive way to the Inn was beautiful and I really felt we were in for a special treat. We had chose to stay in the Chalet, which is a seperate building away from the Inn, but had to check in at the Lodge. We wandered around for quite a few minutes before the Inn Keeper finally appeared. There was some confusion as to which suite we were staying in even though my husband had sent a check for our deposit with the selection on it as requested by the Inn. Fortunately, the room we wanted was available, so no big problem there, otherwise, we would have been very disappointed. I'm not sure where the break down was. Jim, the Innkeeper showed us to our Suite and it was very obvious that they were not expecting us to stay in that Suite as we found it dark and warm because the A/C had not been turned on prior to our arrival. We realize things happen, so we were fine with this oversite. Jim told us about the coffee & dessert hour and welcomed us to that which would be shortly after our arrival. The Suite is gorgeous to say the least, decorated very tastefully. I was sad that the housekeeping staff didn't seem to be very attentive to the cleaning of this room. There were spider webs on the walls, and in the corners and under the bed and love seat was dust and webs so thick, I doubt it had been cleaned in quite some time. The window sills were littered with dead bugs, but being that this setting is in the woods we overlooked that. As we were preparing to go to the dessert hour, we found that there were no towels to be found in the Suite, another oversite by housekeeping.
Dessert hour was very romantic and the sweets were as much enjoyable. The same young man that carried our bags to our room, Jamie, was also our waiter and is so very delightful. The bedding was very nice and we slept very well. The next morning, I left house keeping a note asking if they would leave me the supplies that I would need to do some light cleaning and they did spend some time doing a little better with the cleaning, although it still left alot to be desired. We did find that the nightly turn down service noted on the amenities, is leaving the bed unmade with the sheets pulled up after the daily cleaning. The suite has a wonderful soaking tub which we would have used each night, had we had ample towels for our needs.
We did the fondue dinner on Saturday evening and it was fabulous located in a little cabin that is on the property. This was a real treat~the the chef does a great job with this and we enjoyed it a lot. These innkeepers are real nature lovers and we enjoyed seeing all of the facilities they have for the animals all around the Inn. The grounds are neat, but we were disappointed that the lovely waterfalls were not working and obviously had not in a while.
The breakfasts were very good. Geared more towards being healthy versus a bountiful plate of all of the things we like to eat while we're on vacation. We enjoy different, so they were pleasing to us.
I think it might be good if the Innkeepers mentioned in their "about us" that the Chalet sits down a slop away from the house and if someone isn't in relatively good condition, the walk up and down each day can be difficult. For that reason, an older person might find it better to stay in the main Inn. We didn't look at the rooms in the Inn, so I can't speak of them.
Jim, the Innkeep is truly a delightful man. He knows this area very well and each attraction and restaurant he recommended was excellent. Jim is an older man and at times can be forgetful, but his charming personality, makes him a joy to work with.
I'm hoping that my review won't discourage anyone from giving Richmont a try. I would ask for something in writing regarding the particular room reservation, and don't be afraid to ask for additional cleaning if you deem necessary. It's ashame that I have seen from previous guests complaints of cleaning issues and it appears that still has not been addressed. Several reviews from previous guests also mentioned dog hair, barking and a smell while in the main inn, we did not notice that during our visit.
All in all, we had a very enjoyable visit, and would visit this Inn again. However, I do not feel that this Inn is deserving of being on the Select Registry. Some attention to the grounds and proper training of the housekeeping staff, would possibly warrant a return to that status.
Room Tip: Always get a confirmation in writing from this Inn. When you check in, do a quick visual inspection...
