We checked into this hotel after driving 12 hours. The front desk told us only "suites" were available. For $150. (fib #1) We thought this was ridiculously expensive for a Country Inn & Suites , but were desperate for a place to stay, as many hotels were booked with a Tennessee football game. So, we checked-in and went to dinner.
Came back in an hour and tried to get in our room. The key didn't work, and a woman appeared and told us it was her room. We showed her the number the front-desk attendant wrote on our card and it was correct. Anyway, we headed back down to the lobby to get another room. The front desk attendant's response was that she picked up the phone to call the people in the suite and inform them that they needed to move to another room. Mind you, this is after 10pm at night! We were shocked and told her no, please just give us another room. For heaven's sake, can you imagine having to get out of bed to change rooms at a hotel? Ridiculous!
So, we were offered another room, that was not a suite. She was going to drop the price to $125. That was fine. We asked if it was also non-smoking, and were assured it was. (fib#2). Upon entering the room we about gagged. It REEKED of cigarette smoke. I called the front desk and let the lady know this was most definitely NOT a non-smoking room, and what with all the stains on the walls, carpet and ceiling, it was also most definitely NOT a $125 a night room! She apologized and said she could lower the price to $90, and was going to come up to the room and sanitize it. A few minutes later she entered our room and started spraying this spray bottle with some solution in it all over our room. We were so tired and worn down we just sat there while she was spraying God-knows what kind of chemicals all over the place. My husband and I are totally disgusted and my two young children were all just shaking our heads. Then the hubby decides to check for bed bugs. Good news, no sign of bed bugs. Then he accidentally pulled back the sheet from the mattress and said "THAT'S IT! WE ARE OUT OF HERE!!". I looked at the mattress and it had the biggest, nastiest stain I had ever seen on a mattress. I don't know what had happened, but my best guess would be somebody either gave birth on that mattress, or somebody died on it. It was one disgusting huge dried blood stain. UNBELIEVABLE!
We got the heck out of there and went to get a refund. The front desk attendant was prompt in refunding our money, and apologized for the smell of smoke in the room. I told her about the horrific stain on the mattress and she said she'd "make a note of it". hmmm, a note? The mattress needs to be dumped in the trash.
My hubby and kids and I are pretty easy-going. When we are on a roadtrip, all we really want is a clean room, things in good repair, and hopefully a breakfast and pool. We have had good experience with the Country Inn & Suites in the past in Illinois, but WOW, between several errors by the front desk attendant and a very dirty room, this stay has really changed my opinion of this chain. You know it's bad when you leave at midnight and decide you'd rather sleep in your Suburban if necessary than to stay in your hotel room!
