My family has traveled to Pigeon Forge on numerous occasions. When we first started, we tried several different hotels, but now we have settled on the Best Western Plaza Inn.
If you've gone to Pigeon Forge before, you will understand that there are an incredible number of hotels, as well as an incredible number of visitors to the area (especially during the Summer, Fall, and Christmas seasons). If you're looking for a five star, high class hotel in the town you'll be hard pressed to do so.
Why then has our family chosen to stay at the Best Western over and over again?
#1 Safety and Security- I don't ever want to stay at a hotel where this is compromised. I have always felt safe at this hotel. The rooms have dead bolts, chain back ups, and key cards for entry.
#2 Cleanliness- I don't want to stay in a dirty hotel. Granted, the Best Western like most other hotels in Pigeon Forge does show wear from the tremendous number of guests that visit year round, we have always found our rooms to be clean. I've noticed other little things too that impress me. For example, at the indoor pool, the staff not only cleans the pool each day (which I'm sure is required), but they also spray/wipe down the deck chairs as well.
#3 Service- The staff of this hotel has always been friendly and eager to assist. We have come to know several staff members by name. There are few if any hotels that I can say that about.
#4 Location- Getting around Pigeon Forge can be a traffic nightmare. The Plaza Inn is located on the Parkway, near the entrance to Dollywood. It also has direct access to the Veteran's Parkway (the new road that most people would refer to as the back entrance which allows you to miss the bumper to bumper traffic) and Teaster Lane which is also another good back road. You're in walking distance to the Dixie Stampede and other restaurants.
#5 Value- There are cheaper hotels in Pigeon Forge, but you certainly get what you pay for. Beware of the hotels down the street which advertize $29 a night. Check the website, because you’ll have a variety of rooms from which to choose. The hotel has had a few additions over the years. The original part has outdoor access rooms overlooking the main parking lot. These are your basic rooms. Another wing was added to the back, with indoor access. These are considered your mountain view rooms. They are a little more upscale than the older section. There are also the indoor pool rooms, which are bigger but a little more expensive. We typically stay in the indoor pool rooms because of the room size (3 kids) and easy access to the indoor pool. All these rooms have different rates. You can also get a 10% discount for AAA, but look around Pigeon Forge and the Pigeon Forge website and you should be able to find a 15% off coupon for weekday rates. Not all rooms have decks, so make sure you check before you get a room if that’s a concern for you.
Breakfast is served in the Continental Café. It’s your basic continental fare, cereal, toast/bagels, oatmeal, mini-donuts… During busy times, they may have a little more like gravy and biscuits. Nothing elaborate, but more than you can eat (and it’s included in the price of the room). You might want to take the plastic tray that’s under you coffee pot in the room to help carry your food.
Pools- There are three pools- one indoor and two outdoor. The back, outdoor section pool is typically the least crowded and goes to about 4/5 deep. The main outdoor pool near the office goes to a depth of 6/7 feet. It can get crowded in the summer. The indoor pool has a hot tub in the middle and only goes to a depth of four feet. This pool can get really crowded, especially in the cold months since everybody uses it.
The hotel does have WiFi. You’ll need an access code which is printed on your receipt. I don’t use wireless as much as my wife and kids. They have said that this is one area that could be improved. The connection is rather slow.
All in all, we have been extremely pleased with the Best Western Plaza Inn. We’ve have stayed there on many occasions, and plan to do so many more.
