“Very Dirty. Very Poor. Very Sad.”
This Thanksgiving, my family drove to Oak Ridge to spend time with in-laws. We had a difficult time with finding a property that fit our budget. My sister suggested another property about 12 miles away. I finally found this Days Inn, in town, for the same price.
Since about the 90’s, I’ve been quite disappointed with Days Inn. They have not been quite up to the standard that I have set for myself to be considered comfortable. But if they are so bad, then they would be out of business, right? With my personal greed of accumulating Amtrak points through a partnership program, I went ahead and booked the Days Inn of Oak Ridge.
We checked in around 5 PM and noticed that the beds seemed awkward. One was leaning a bit. Upon inspection, the bed was being held up with a brick. That gave me the impression of sugar packets stabilizing your dinner table at a decent restaurant. Ugh. The other bed caved in the center – so bad that my wife and I couldn’t share a bed or else we would both gravitate towards the center.
Other issues: Silly string on walls and ceiling; unidentifiable gross-ness on sides of box of springs; No ice bucket liner; No trash liner; minimally hot water.
On the morning after the 2nd night, I decided to take a bath. Got a call from the front desk asking to be sure that our shower curtain was inside the tub – water was leaking into the room below! Turns out it was probably leaking from under the tub through the overflow drain that may not have been hooked up to anything. They said they would send maintenance up after we checked out to look at it. Maintenance showed up 5 minutes later, trying to get into our room.
I’m sure we could have changed rooms, but the hassle of moving with the kids would have been a monumental task. Frankly, I don’t think they had a nicer room. If I hadn’t already made my non-refundable payment, I most definitely would have been glad to pay $20 more for another property in town – or paid the same for a real refurbished room 12 miles away.
On the plus side, the refrigerator, coffee maker and TV worked flawlessly. Perhaps the best thing about this Days Inn was that my wife no longer complains about our bed in our RV!
