“Very good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We stayed over the New Year which in Queenscliffe is a very busy time of the year. I had some reservations after reading some of the other previous reviews but my expereince was overwhelmingly positive. The room may have been a little warm (no airconditioning) but the service we recieved from staff was top notch. Particular mention to the young girl - blonde (sorry forgottten her name) who was most attentive and thorough when serving breakfast each morning. A credit to the hotel.

“Could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

Athelstane house is a charming old building in the centre of Queenscliff. It was obviously renovated a few years ago and it is srarting to get a bit tired. The rooms are typical of the era the house was constructed in, high ceilings and relatively small. The bathroom had a spa and was of a reasonable size. There was no Fridge in the room and the louvres on the widows had some broken off which tends to detract from what is marketed as an up market B & B. We had dinner in the restaurant and can confirm it is not a one hat restaurant, In fact it is not any better than pub grub. The breakfast was no better with my boiled eggs being served hard. Overall dissappointing !

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your feedback. Do do use them for in house training and the issues will be be discussed. In regard to the dining room we ceased having a fine dining restaurant in June 2010. We did notify the Good food guide then. Our current menu has seen an increase in customers. The current 2012 edition of The Age Good Food Guide reflects our current status.

Again thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts.

Regards,

Ross

“Cottage on main street owned by Athelstane, rustic charm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

Stayed here as part of a road trip along Great Ocean Road and the south-coast of Victoria. There were 6 of us travelling, and we stayed overnight in a cottage on the main street of Queenscliff. This property is rented out by Athelstane.
Being on the main street (albeit 150m down from the shops) makes it conveniently located, and i'm sure granted a longer stay, this would property's features would begin to shine.
However, we found the rustic charm of the little 2 bedroom cottage gave way to the overwhelming feeling that it felt like a house still lived in, and although this would usually indicate a 'home away from home', it felt slightly eery. I think in a nutshell, the cottage looked dated, with well-used and well-worn appliances, and furniture.
The bedroom's were comfortable, one appeared to have been updated with modern decor, and the other kept relics of a former life (a luggage trunk, old lacqered wood cardboards, and a hatstand that bore a very old army helmet (very cool)).
The living room contained an old sofa bed that was really worn, and when folded out had such a deep valley in the middle that we had to counter it by adding pillows and blankets underneath (I would say this night's sleep was not very comfortable), and we had to move some furniture around to get it folded out.
The cottage itself was extremely small (eludes to an early 20th century build date), and there was an obvious extension added to the cottage at some stage, which now houses an original bathroom (it still feels it, with old fittings, and worn out tile work); the kitchen, the cottage's only toilet (at the back of the property), and a second access point to the backyard (the first access point being from the main bedroom).
I have no complaints about the service of Athelstane house, they were lovely, and welcomed us with a warm reception. They were helpful throughout our stay, and provided us with options (separate rooms in Athelstane house, or a separate property (the cottage we stayed at)).
In attempting to offer constructive criticism with regard to the cottage, my suggestion would be to update the property with modern amenities, and furniture, whilst attempting to keep the rustic charm of the cottage, part of it's heritage and the location.
My main concerns were the location of the toilet, and the dated bathroom. Internet would be something that could also be considered on the property.

“Best B&B on the Great Ocean Road”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2011

We were very happy staying at the Athelstane. The room we had (Room 1) was spacious with the most comfortable king bed and the ensuite bathroom was roomy with a spa bath and heater (a big plus on cold nights). The Althelstane staff was amazing, going beyond the call of duty to ensure we were comfortable and happy. Breakfast options provided were excellent and the food was deliciously cooked. So was dinner - the fig and walnut crumble was divine!! We would definitely return to picturesque Queenscliff and staying at the Athestane.

Room Tip: Book one of the larger balcony rooms

“terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2011

I stayed recently for business and I have to say I was less than impressed. I was on Room 7: no view, no balcony, QS bed and dated fittings. There were cobwebs on the inside of the windows that made me suspicious of the cleaning standards and while my room had a spa, it was not working. The room was quite large however the TV was tiny and the cheap window dressings meannt that the room was flooded with light in the early hours whether you wanted or not! I have read great reviews about the balcony rooms with KS beds - my room was nothing like that!
