“Adequate and therefore overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The Newport Mirage website makes this place look like a fancy resort, and I guess it is a resort in so far as there is a pool and restaurant. But in reality, this place is just a motel with resort prices.

The positives: if you get a room with a view, it is pretty amazing. The rooms are clean. Our request for a roll-away bed was met. The cleaning staff were very friendly. The bathroom and towels were nice.

The negatives: The building is tired, that said, they’re doing some work which might smarten the place up a bit. Check-in and check-out were slow despite there being no queues. The desk staff were pretty surly (everything is too much trouble). Our room smelt like smoke from decades ago. It’s just not that great.

Overall: The Mirage is the nicest place in town, so if you’re in Newport for a special night away, stay here and spend extra and book the rooms with views because the view is the highlight of staying here.

But, if you’re in town for a function, rather than a special night away, you’d be better off saving some cash and staying at the pub. The Newport Arms is across the road from the Mirage, it is cheaper (half the price) and the pub closes at midnight, so it is quiet after midnight.

Room Tip: if you're going to stay here, spend more and pay for a room with a view.

“Dated accommodation in a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Pros: Good location and access to northern beaches
Cons: Overpriced, Not equal to 4 star, Street side rooms are noisy, building is dated
There would only be two rooms with water views and we were kept up by the very noisy water pipes, and music from the Newport Arms across the road. Positively, the bed was very comfortable, the linen was very good quality and clean, and it offers a good location for access to attractions on Sydney's northern beaches. However, it is definitely not worth a $198 rack rate per night.

Room Tip: Request a room on the non street side

“Good Location - Poor quality of service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We stayed at the Mirage...on the 25th Dec:for $198..for one night only..( Recieved a phonecall asking if we required a meal ..as they could only offer platters that day) actually 2.pm..until 9.30am..not even 24 hours...you would expect a breakfast...we were also charged $50..even though they had our credit card. no/ and our Rego.....and then $3,00 for a bottle of water from the fridge. Oh! By the way..the bathroom only had ... shampoo / conditioner / 1 x little tiny soap for one person........and no shower - gel............... GOOD ON YOU MIRAGE

Room Tip: Not bad if you want to be ripped off

“Too expensive and not sure why/how this is rated ****”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

Stayed at this property recently, and didn't have any expectations, thank goodness as they wouldn't have been met. The price for a standard room at around $200 AUD is far too expensive for a small room, miniscule bathroom, and the building which is in general disrepair.

The outlook over newport is lovely, but we didn't have a view from our room, and i wouldn't go back.

I'd pay another $100 and star in a 'proper' 5 star hotel anytime over this place....

“The art of being unfriendly and charging money for it.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

Well, start with the good things:
The wedding we attended was outside on the top terrace with a stunning view, and the weather was brilliant (but I'm not sure wether the hotel arranged that). Drinks and wedding cake at the reception were outstanding (but not the hotels choice) the food was good, and the boys and girls that served te dinner were very friendly (and yes maybe a little bit to efficient, blink and your glass/plate was gone).
But that was about it. I have never been to such an unfriendly place, service is a word from an other language and smiles are probably forbidden (except for the staff at the dinner).

As we arrived the booked (and paid !!) parking space was not available, becouse there was a business meeting, "and there is nothing we can do" said the staff at the reception. It took them about 30 minutes to clear the entrance so that the disabled father of the groom could be helped in to the "lobby" (well, lobby? More an old sofa next to the very windy entrance, where he had to wait for an other half hour before they could find the key to his room, and no, no drinks available, of course not, this is not the bar (the receptionist didn't exactly say "you silly person" but I am pretty sure that is what she thought, and she was visibly annoyed by the old and invalid people sitting in her lobby)

The wedding went perfect and the dinner and party went well till 21.50, when the bar closed, because the party finished at 22.00 o'clock.
So it was cetainly not our party that kept other guests awake.
After a short excursion to the pub across the road (last drinks at 23.00 o clock!!) we retired to our minuscule room with miniature bathroom (about $ 250 (without breakkfast) probably because of the spectacular vieuw of the adjacent appartment buiding, 6 mtrs away) and very thin walls (and it is a very noisy hotel!!).
The room was practical and clean but claustrofobical small.

Next morning we had a more or less decent breakfast (nothing special except for $50 they charged us when we went to pay the bill) The breakfast was arranged at 09.30.
for the group from the wedding that stayed the night (about 25 people). As we returned to our room at 10.15 to get our bags and check out we found that our room was locked. At the reception there was a que of people with the same problem and we all got the same very unfriendly reaction: "Checkout is at 10. Of course your room is locked (again the "you silly person" look from the receptionist, she did that perfectly) ".
Then they tried to make us feel very lucky for not charging extra for a late checkout. ) And all that without even the glimmer of a smile from the staff (In my mind something started flashing "Fawlty Towers".
I think the receptionst/proprietor realised that it was not very likely that we would ever come back all the way from Holland to spend an other night at her hotel, so why bother.

The management of this hotel must have discovered a specific training in non-service and not being friendly towards your customers, because they excell in it !

Room Tip: Be specific about a room with a vieuw, otherwise you will end up looking at the appartments (6 mtr...
