The long and short of the matter is this: if you're used to the Ritz Carlton or W, this will not be the hotel for you. But if you're used to mid-range hotels, that are clean and won't break your bank account look no further.
A friend and I stayed here for a week in September 2011. And after reading many of the reviews here, were quite skeptical. Honestly we didn't know what to expect and were ever bit prepared to check for bedbugs and the like (which we actually did!) but thankfully, we were wonderfully surprised! This wound up being a great hotel for the price (around $70/night booked through Travelocity)!
First off, the location of the hotel could not be beat! There was a bus stop right outside the door that took you straight to South Beach (about a 40min trip with stops) and there is also a car rental place attached to the hotel itself. It was also right across the street from many eateries, a few shops and a large grocery store. There was also a complimentary shuttle bus that would take you to the mall or South Beach and although the times it ran were limited, it was still nice to have the option available.
Regarding the hotel itself, the lobby was a little dated decor-wise and the elevators a little small, so you may prefer the stairs. However we were thoroughly happy with our room itself! It was a nice size (there was no carpet) and very clean! It also had a little balcony with a view of the ocean which was nice as well. There was also a pool outside and a hot tub that looked a little old but worked perfectly. There was also a restaurant inside and this was where your complimentary breakfast was. Now I will say this, their continental breakfast needs a bit of work. It was basically your choice of bagel or cereal, with a little (and I mean little-like shot glass size) cup of orange, with coffee or milk. I'm assuming this was the hotels way of getting someone to order off the menu instead, so one may just be better off going across the street to the Burger King for breakfast. However I will give them points for at least having the waiters serve it to you with a smile. Majority of the guests there were extremely quiet save 1 night where some intoxicated guests were in the hallway singing very loudly at 3 am. But other than that, there was no major issues of noise. The rooms also do not have a microwave so one should prepare for that.
Outside we found the beach to be quiet and well kept but regarding the lounge chairs, everything most other reviewers said is true. You could not take them remotely close to the beach and several of them were so worn, you probably wouldn't want to. So me and my friend just opted for towels instead which worked out perfectly.
Regarding hotel staff, everyone was extremely helpful and very friendly. Although the housekeepers didn't seem to speak the best English, they still managed to always greet us with a hello and smile. The front desk lady was also very courteous and helpful. Even after getting chewed out by someone (I overheard this and it was not pretty), she still managed to turn around and greet me and my friend with the biggest smile and a friendly attitude as if nothing had happened. So props to her for not letting a bad experience ruin her customer service.
Overall this really was a happy experience for both myself and my friend. We would definitely without hesitation stay again!
This hotel would probably be most enjoyed by young couples just starting out, families, small grouping of friends or solo travelers. I don't think it would be enjoyed by honeymooners, corporate execs or those on business (as some amenities are limited) or rowdy crowds (the hotel was pretty quiet during our stay).
