“Would have turned around and come home if we weren't so tired”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2010

We won a prize which was a 2 night stay at this hotel inc dinner, B&B. After a lovely trip through Wales we arrived in the car park and almost decided to come home there and then (and that was just from looking at it!). However, we decided to stay (as it was free) and can only say that if we were paying for it we would have been very disappointed. Our room was small and shabby, overlooking the small courtyard at the back which was where the bins were - not an attractive view.

That evening we were the only people in the restaurant and were told what time we had to eat as they had two large functions on and would be very busy. I had a prawn-cocktail for my starter and had to send it back at the prawns were still partially frozen. The main course (steak) was quite nice but the desserts were all quite heavy.

Breakfast was okay but the next evening we had very nosiy people in the room next to us (we had been given a room with a door to an adjoining room) and the man had a loud voice. Fortunately, we heard him complaining at reception later about the condition of his room and he was moved. That evening there was another function on and the noise from the DJ and band was really loud and went on until after midnight.

The shower was very difficult to get working and was not powerful enough and I burnt my hand on the towel rail so overall we were not very impressed.

However, the staff were very pleasant and Barry is a nice enough place to visit but we won't be back!

“Sad family”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2008

We stayed at the Mount Sorrel hotel in Barry for 2 nights.
We were so disappointed with the very poor standard of the family rooms. The reception and communal areas of the hotel were light and satifactory but upstairs hdden from view are two very unpleasant family rooms.
The decoration in these rooms was v ery old and shabby. The smell was musty and unwelcoming. The bunk beds were visably stained and no safety support was in place on the top bunk.
The carpet was very old and torn with underlay showing. The central heating pipes were exposed and rusty. The bedding and covers were worn and old. The shower cubicle was very old and paint was peeling off . The ceilings were grey and wallpaper was peeling off. Certainly this harks back to poor boarding house accommodation years ago.
These two family rooms 18 and 26 are obviously of a far lower quality than other rooms on offer or there would be numerous complaints.
The hotel staff were apologetic and aware of the almost squalid condition of these two rooms but are obviously doing nothing about it.
Best Western hotels have a 'consistent standards' policy and this is why we were so shocked at the standard however many 'stars' this hotel does or doesnt have - basic acceptable accomodation is a starting point -this didn't come near.
This is a great pity as staff were welcoming but were still prepared to say nothing at reception until we came down and complained.
Decoration of these rooms should be immediate and certainly the safety issues should be addressed.
We are needing to be travelling reguarly to this area but cannot stay here due to the condition of these rooms. This lets the side down dreadfully for the Best Western chain and also the family owners themselves.

“Oh dear!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2008

Went to see Madonna in Cardiff and as expected really difficult to get a room so ended up booking this hotel at £140.00 for the night for room including breakfast! Room was very dated, uncomfortable beds, mouldy bathroom tiles and it smelt like a deep fat fryer (it was above the kictchen i think!) also view out of the window was of the back yard full of thistles and weeds! Breakfast was also very dull indeed with little choice.
I gave this hotel 2 out of 5 and not 1 our of 5 beacuse of the reception staff, they were extremley freindly and accommodating such a shame that the hotel does not reflect this. If floral wallpaper is your thing you will love this hotel, if not don't bother!

“OK, fine as a three star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2008

Stayed for two nights here in July 2008. Room was a small double with bathroom, on the front of the hotel with views across the Bristol Channel, which was nice!

The room was slightly tired, and had a large old television, controlled by a remote on which only about 25% of the buttons worked preventing access to teletext etc.

The bathroom was in need of some refurbishement, and the shower head was retained on it's rail by a jubilee clip! Shower pressure was average.

Bar was very quiet, although very reasonably priced, and the staff were very welcoming. Breakfast was very good, but I did not have dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Car Park is quite small and very steep to enter, however street parking is available and seemed safe.
