Travelling for work I was booking into the Mount Sorrel and once the reviews on this site had been read I was dreading my stay. However, once I arrived the staff were more than helpful, friendly and really really welcoming.
I could smell new paint as I walked to the 1st floor where my room was which immediately made me think a facelift of some kind may have happened recently.
The room was warm, large and for a 3* hotel more than fine. The bed was very big and very comfy with a duvet and although the room did need a bit of a 2012 facelift it was spotless and more than I needed. Hairdryer in the room too. The lighting was nice too with a lamp and small wall lights when a bright overhead light wasn't needed.
Plenty of tea, coffee and milk in the room (always an annoyance when only 2 tea bags are provided) and although the tv was old it worked fine and had freeview channels available. Free wi-fi is also available. The bathroom was small and had no shelves or space to put things but the shower was fine, had plenty of towels and a heated towel rail. Odd to see a bidet but hey ho!
I ate in the bar instead of the restaurant, simply due to the lack of company and ambiance as the hotel was rather empty and the restaurant was deserted. The Bar menu seemed basic with a few basic specials but the home made chips and great service made up for it. Unfortunately I wasn't aware that the menu for the restaurant and the bar were different and consequently missed out on slightly more sophisticated dining experience. Maybe worth asking about both menus if you eat here BEFORE you order.
All in all a nice place to stay, even if the carpark is a challenge, quite tight and very steep due to the hotel being situated on top of a huge hill!
