“Not bad at all considering the reviews!”

Travelling for work I was booking into the Mount Sorrel and once the reviews on this site had been read I was dreading my stay. However, once I arrived the staff were more than helpful, friendly and really really welcoming.
I could smell new paint as I walked to the 1st floor where my room was which immediately made me think a facelift of some kind may have happened recently.

The room was warm, large and for a 3* hotel more than fine. The bed was very big and very comfy with a duvet and although the room did need a bit of a 2012 facelift it was spotless and more than I needed. Hairdryer in the room too. The lighting was nice too with a lamp and small wall lights when a bright overhead light wasn't needed.
Plenty of tea, coffee and milk in the room (always an annoyance when only 2 tea bags are provided) and although the tv was old it worked fine and had freeview channels available. Free wi-fi is also available. The bathroom was small and had no shelves or space to put things but the shower was fine, had plenty of towels and a heated towel rail. Odd to see a bidet but hey ho!

I ate in the bar instead of the restaurant, simply due to the lack of company and ambiance as the hotel was rather empty and the restaurant was deserted. The Bar menu seemed basic with a few basic specials but the home made chips and great service made up for it. Unfortunately I wasn't aware that the menu for the restaurant and the bar were different and consequently missed out on slightly more sophisticated dining experience. Maybe worth asking about both menus if you eat here BEFORE you order.

All in all a nice place to stay, even if the carpark is a challenge, quite tight and very steep due to the hotel being situated on top of a huge hill!

Room Tip: I had room 33, a double. Bed was huge for one! No noise and a quiet 1st floor position.

“Brilliant Value for Money”

We stayed at the Mount Sorrel over the New Year and had an absolutely brilliant time. All of the staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient especially Bethan the Assistant Manager. The bedroom was warm, very clean and comfortable as was the rest of the hotel. We ate all our meals in the hotel, including the "Gala Dinner" on New Years Eve and could find no fault with the food which was well cooked and presented. The hotel has a good ambience. We did not try the leisure facilites but other guests assured us that they were good. We shall return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a sea view

“good night had by all”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

a charming hotel, nice clean comfortable spacious rooms with kingsize bed, breakfast average with a choice and freshly cooked to order, can be bit noisy if function on and you happen to be above the room. Rooms were nice and warm with helpful staff.

“Rename as Mount Sorry!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

A real mix of a hotel. Reception areas, bar, dining and leisure suite were all clean and relatively modern. Friendly, helpful receptionist. Asked for payment in full for the 2 days - never asked before in any hotel we have visited. And then - Oh dear - once upstairs, shabby decor and carpets. The room was reasonably large as it was a family room with double and bunk beds and we were only two. Curtains would not close properly. As someone with plumbing knowledge I was able to get the heating valve closed - the room was far too hot. The TV defeated us, until we realised the remote did not work with that TV, which when watching it swung out into the room so that if left in that position at night would be a real hazard. Bathroom showing real signs of age - slippery shower floor with no anti-slip mat.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else

“Can't beat it..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

We stayed here in early October, it was severly hot........ Great room on the 4th floor overlooking the the harbour... Twas hot in the room, but the windows opened, both letting in a cooling breeze and vehicle noise and church bells on Sunday..... it bothered us not at all.... Very large room, huge bed, older telly, and a nice bathroom... We had a great 4 nights, swam in the pool, and hung out in Barry visiting my Mum just up the road..
Some reviews we read cast aspersions on this hotel, we found it to be an all around splendid hotel, older, but better....................

Room Tip: We just showed up, it was fine..
