My wife treated me to a short break/ spa package at the hotel to celebrate St Dwynwen's day (25 January) --which is the Welsh equivalent to St Valentine's. On arrival we were given a VIP style welcome, and the room we were allocated was spacious & delightfully furnished - proper quality antique furniture, with (in sharp contrast) a flat-screen tv; the en suite bathroom was spotless and, I'd say, recently refurbished. Rooms are identified by personal names - Gwen, Eugenie etc., - not numbers, adding to its sense of character.
Throughout, the antique furniture and paintings add to the class and homeliness of the hotel, as do the log fires in the foyer and the large lounge. The service, and the welcoming and obliging attitude of staff, were excellent. The only serious fault was that I was unable to get the Welsh S4C tv channel on the room tv (although it was listed in the service folder); I reported this on checking out and the receptionist apologised and promised to rectify it.
The hotel's spa - opened some 6 years ago -is all one needs for a relaxing, and invigorating day - large pool, sauna, hot tub on an open verandah overlooking tyhe lake and River Irfon. All in all, this is a very rural hotel - far from the madding crowd but not inaccessible (and you could get there and back by train!) - a civilised place where you're made to feel at home.
