“Shabby and over-priced”

The Tyf Eco-hotel does the eco movement no favours. Eco-friendly does not have to mean poorly-equipped and poorly maintained. Our room had one bedside table (of a sort) between 3 beds, one chair ditto, no chest of drawers or dressing-table, and no storage whatsoever in the shower room; we had to put our stuff on the topof the loo tank or on the floor. Of the 3 sash windows only one would open, and was so stiff my wife couldn't manage it at all.
The breakfasts may have been organic but they were nothing special.
Two good points: we had an excellent evening meal (by arrangement) and the location is lovely. But we will be very wary of eco-hotels in future.

“Friendly, fun but overpriced”

This hotel is interesting and quirky. The staff was friendly and helpful. But while it was our most expensive accommodation in Wales, it was also our least comfortable and least together. It is kind of like a hostel but at hotel prices. (We paid $160 US.) The breakfast was hip summer camp fare, tea wasn't hot...If the prices were a lot lower then it would be a great place to recommend. The tower is great! And there is a very comfortable bar/lounge.

“Shabby bo-ho chic”

If you are looking for 4 star, pamper fest, with continual attention and a TV in each room, then Twr-Y-Felin (or TYF) really isn't for you.

TYF is rebranding itself this year as an eco-hotel, and have made impressive moves to replace all their supplies with organic's. From the bar to the toiletries (ecover) they have worked hard to deliver.

OK, it isn't the plushest hotel you will find, but the ambience, welcoming "honesty" bar, location, and comfortable beds more than make up for it. As does the view from the top of the windmill tower - make sure you pull out the hidden seats in the wood panelling and note the old donation box.

Not all the rooms have en-suite facilities, but the Green & Blacks chocolate bar on the pillow is a nice touch.

Breakfast selection is limited (but a full english is possible if you book in advance) to fruit, cereals, yoghurt (Rachels Organic - mmmmmm), toast, coffee and tea and boiled free-range eggs.

We loved it here - a great chill-out place - and have already been back once this year.

“Really relaxing and special”

Just come back from break at Twryfelin l and found it the best place ever to destress after Christmas with my wife and kid. It's an interesting old windmill and has got comfy bedrooms and a small tv lounge and organic wine bar. The restaurant does really tasty home cooked nosh and it was quiet and right in the centre of Saint Davids.

“1 Star accomadation at 4 star prices”

I must first say that I read the reviews on Trip Advisor before we booked this accommodation and looked at the TYF website.

I am also willing to accept that if your company is paying for the trip and there is a large group, the lack of any really comforts may not be an issue.

What is not made clear on the website or here on Trip Advisor is that this is 1 Star accommodation. The rooms are very basic and not welcoming (our en-suite room had a wardrobe without any hanging rail, 2 waiting room type chairs). There was also no TV in the building either shared or in the room.

When we arrived at 17:30 in the evening, we were met (I cannot say greeted) and showed to our room. Our host then left us alone and did not return until the morning. By alone, we were the only ones in the building with no way of asking for directions around the city or help in finding something to do.

The breakfast was healthy but for the price, I expected something much better/substantial. We did not stay the second night.

The next night we stayed at 'The Waterings' which is about 100 meters from this accommodation and was better equipped/friendlier/cheaper by £10/night.

If you are paying for an adventure holiday during the summer (we weren't), then this place might be worth it (although we were not offered any discounts) but it is most certainly not worth staying there as a place to explore St David's and the surrounding countryside.

  • Liked — Quiet (no other guests or staff to disturb us at night). A little too quiet really.
  • Disliked — At half the price, it may have been acceptable but I would not have booked it.
  • Tips/Secrets — Always enquire of the star rating of the accommodation. Do not assume it is priced correctly.
