Although we arrived well after dark, we were given a warm, friendly welcome by a most cheerful owner. We had booked the Burgundy Room, but she explained that she had changed it because there had been a malfunction in one of the fireplaces that had caused someone else's room to fill with smoke. We never quite understood why they were not the party moved, but in the end, it did not matter because we liked our room better when all was said and done. The Penfro is absolutely packed with history and character, which always delights us. We like up-scale, but not generic. After all, for us the point of travel is to experience a place's history, uniqueness, and color.
And, our very large, front-facing room had every conceivable amenity: TV, radio, CD, DVD, hospitality tray, etc. And just outside in the hallway is a frig with chilled water. There were also many thoughtful offerings, including earplugs for anyone having difficulty sleeping (although the place was very quiet).
We asked for a recommendation for dinner and were directed to the Old King's Ams Hotel. Not only was the food delicious, but we were treated to an impromptu performance of the Tenby Male Choir, which had just given a concern in the church.
Our breakfast at one long table in the kitchen was absolutely delicious, and we enjoyed chatting with a young couple from London. They told us all about the aspirational status of Aga stoves. After they left for a hike, the owner took us on a tour of the wonderful building and pointed out its many original features.
