“Slightly quirky - but pretty good”

Reading some of the negative reviews, it's possible there is a wide variation in rooms here - the room we're in has obviously been renovated fairly recently, clean - nice big bathroom with walk-in shower - flat screen telly with Sky Sports. In room tea/coffee - it's a solid 3* hotel in terms of facilities.

Mariners is not a chain hotel - you're likely to be served by the owners in reception or behind the cozy bar (with excellent, well kept beer BTW) at some point. Unless it was full, if you didn't like your room, I'm of the opinion they'd happily move you. They provided free tea/coffee and Welsh Cakes for the folks watching the Rugby World Cup Final at 9am on a Sunday.

Some of the place is 100's of years old, so you'll either think the place is a bit of a warren, or that it has character - I'm plumping for the latter.

Good breakfast included in the price - serves lunch and dinner too - not haute cuisine, but well cooked, honest grub - best fish and chips I'd have some some time, for instance.

I'd be surprised if there's another place in town that was better - but if you're an international traveller and expecting a cookie cutter experience, perhaps West Wales isn't for you.

Room Tip: Ask for room with Walk-in Shower.

“AVOID AVOID AVOID”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011 via mobile

OMG this is probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. All the walls are decorated with wood chip paper, ceilings have cracks, shower has zero pressure, the only power point is other end of the room far from the bed so you can't keep your phone on charge and have it by your bed, tv is old and burns your eyes, lights are dim and wall mounted with horrid old coverings from the 50's, bedding is nasty making me itch all over, kettle is so old its rusty, freeview tv is probably the only mod-con, paid £2.50 for wifi and signal is so weak you from your room you can't even open google!, all the floors creak, the whole hotel is stuffy and stinks of damp, bar is cosy, staff are nice, would never ever come back here, would have rather slept in the car!!! Don't believe the website it is nothing like what is described! This hotel needs extensive refurbishment!

“Best in Havorfordwest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

With some trepidation, I stayed for a couple of nights as part of a walking group holiday. Previous experience of hotels in this town was ghastly but I need not have worried. This hotel looked after our group really well. Service was friendly, helpful and excellent throughout and the food very good. All in all we agreed that the Mariners was a great place, so much so that we have booked it again for next year.

“Excellent position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

My friend booked the Mariners as she knows the area well having grown up there. I have to say its in an excellent position to go out exploring the west Wales coastline. Our friend had a double room to himself which was a bit dated and pokey and smelt a bit damp but when me and my friend got to our twin room it was much nicer. Very large with two queen sized beds and a nice decor. The only complaint was the very soft matresses but then some people might like that! The staff were very helpful and worked very hard. The breakfast was lovely and one night we chose to have a meal in the bar. I can thoroughly recommend it. All three of us had lovely food and having had a nose at what everybody else was eating it all looked fab. The hotel might be a bit on the pricey side in comparison to others in the area but its well worth it. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a twin at the far end of the hotel (ours was room 43)

“Lovely stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

My friend and I stayed here over the bank holiday weekend and were very impressed. Our twin room with double beds was on the top floor and very spacious, plenty of storage, tea and coffee making facilities and a good sized bathroom with plenty of towels.
Breakfast was lovely and plenty of options for the hot breakfast (kippers, full English etc) as well as yoghurts and cereals and fruit juices.
The staff were really friendly and helpful. We ate in the bar one evening and the meal was really tasty with a great selection of vegetables on the side (you had a choice of vegetables, chips, potatoes and salad). It was good value for money.
Haverfordwest is a great base for visits to other places in Pembrokeshire and I would definitely go back to the Mariners.
