“Terrible experience.”

I took my elderly parents to Y Branwen for an evening meal on Saturday 9th October. We have been there on many occasions over recent years and have always been very impressed. Unfortunately since the recent change of management things have gone downhill. The evening started poorly while we were sitting in the bar area waiting to be shown to our table. We had to listen to the drunken foul mouth of one of the 'locals' who seemed oblivious to the mixed company he was sharing the bar with.
The menu as usual was varied and we were looking forward to the usual high standard. My meal and my mother's were fine but my partner left most of hers and my father could not eat his at all. When the waitress asked if everything was okay with the meal my father politely and apologetically explained that his meal was virtually inedible. He was told that they had not had any other complaints in a very offhand manner. She said she would pass his comments on to the 'chef'. The 'chef' came out of the kitchen and completely ignored us. When my father went to pay he apologised again and the waitress told him she was very upset by the way he had spoken to her! This was a ridiculous comment because my father is an old fashioned gentleman who was apologising for the fact that he could not eat his meal because it was dreadful!
The cost of my fathers food was deducted from the bill but it was done in a very reluctant and somewhat hostile manner.
We will never return to Y Branwen which is a shame because the food and the staff used to be excellent but not anymore.

“About on par as last time, but not quite”

Hi, you may notice this is a second review of this hotel i have made. I visited before re-vamp, after re-vamp and now under new management too. I could not fault it at all last time but there are still a couple of issues that need to be ironed out under new management. Food nice but not up to standards it has been previously, and quite expensive for what it is at present. Room very nice as always but there was an issue with the bedding needing to be changed on our arrival, human or dog hairs still on it even though advised had come straight from the laundry, but to give them their due they dealt with this & rectified it straight away. We were on a treat as a family, after getting married abroad in July, a real treat for us nowadays. We were advised incorrectly that we would be ok to go up the hill to a pub with our little one on a sat night, only to arrive at one have one drink & have to come back down as children not allowed?, thought local knowledge would have extended to know this, but unfortunately not the case. General service & hospitality excellent however not as good as previously visits, but maybe thats because we got to know the previous owners very well, as we used to be there at least twice a year then! The new owners tried really hard and accomodated every request we made, things can only get better again! Location very good. Locals very friendly. Give it a try, it is worth a visit. I also feel that the hotel could offer you an incentive to eat & stay there & offer a % off the price if you eat in the restaurant aswell?

“Strange Place”

Arrived on a Tuesday night for a meal at 7.45 with no reservation looking for dinner for 2. Was told they couldn't accomodate us even though restaurant only contained 3-4 couples. When asked if we could eat in the bar we were informed the kitchen wasn't taking any more orders even though only 1 person was sat drinking in the bar. A business that advertises good food daily but can't serve a simple bar meal on a Tuesday evening late September isn't in my book a good pub. Personally i wouldn't recomend this pub to anybody based on our experience.

We arrived here after going to the rather horrid Queens Hotel just up the road. Very nice bar area with Welsh real ales and a very nice Sunday lunch in the restaurant with friendly and helpful staff.

“Good service, good rooms, good bar”

We stayed here as a base for walking up Snowdon, its in a great spot in the shadow of the impressive castle.

We had room 6, which was a good size, with a large bed and small bathroom. We were overlooking the road but the noise wasn't an issue. The owners were very good and were flexible about breakfast times.

The bar was excellent with a good range of beers and a good mix of locals. The food was OK, standard pub grub and maybe a bit overpiced.
