I stayed at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis during a 3-day job interview in December, 2009. The hotel is clean, friendly, safe, and modern. My room was a suite, and I was told that all rooms in the hotel are suites. My room had two flat screen tvs, a separate sitting area, a kitchenette, comfortable beds, and a clean and modern bathroom. The in room coffee is hotel standard and the bathroom products were and upgrade on most. Fast, free, wireless internet was available in my room (and I presume throughout the hotel). The hotel is in a nice university neighborhood and close to all the downtown amenities. My only significant problem was a light but continuous noise in the room that I believe was related to the heating. Some might not be bothered by it at all, but I am a light sleeper and had to resort to ear plugs one night (I never stay away from home without some). That said, I was not bothered enough to ask for a new room.
I would be wary of staying at this hotel on busy weekends. There was very little activity the two nights I stayed, but the layout of the rooms is such that if there is a loud wedding reception or similar event going on in one of the ballrooms, many guest rooms will hear it loud and clear. If you are concerned, I'd suggest requesting a room as far away from the ballrooms as possible when you book or check in.
For a great breakfast, check out Brother Juniper's just a few blocks away. Apparently, it is a Memphis institution. The staff will direct you.
