“A Genuine Suite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2011

Unlike many other "suites" this one was the real deal. You enter an area with a couch, desk, TV and fridge, and then there is a door to the bedroom. So if you're in the front of the room watching one of the many TV channel, you won't bother someone in the bedroom (where there's another TV).

Room was very clean. Used the wired Internet which was free and fast. Front desk folks all very nice. Plenty of free parking, but be sure you're in the correct lot. Free business center in the lobby with 2 PCs and 2 printers.

University is across the street, but that's it for walking distance. Need a car to go anywhere else.

Wouldn't hesitate to return.

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2011

We had a wonderfultime in Memphis and at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis. The location on the university campus is a nice change of pace--lots of space to walk and be outside if you desire. Not as close to restaurants, but there are some goods ones within a few miles. Close to Liberty Bowl Stadium (2.5 miles or so), which was great since we were in town for the Liberty Bowl. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The hotel is in very good condition and we enjoyed our King suite. Our 4 year old daughter enjoyed having her own "room" and TV with the pull out sofa bed. Breakfast buffet was good. Overall, an excellent experience.

“Management does not care about the customer”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

I called on July 31st, 2010 to set a reservation for this August 5, 2010 - a one night stay-double bed room. By August 2nd there were charges debited to my checking account via my debit card from Holiday Inn Univ of Memphis. I called and spoke to a lady at the front desk and she said I was charged due to not showing up on the 31st of July. I explained that my reservation was for August 5th. Total debits came to approximately $400. I called the hotel and they sent me to three different extensions and all said they had to pass me to someone else. They finally sent me back to the front desk. Later I spoke to a manager named Chase. He said it was JUST a mistake and he would fix it, no big deal he said. The next day, I had yet another $242 debit pending for the Holiday Inn Univ of Memphis. I spoke to a lady "said she owned the hotel" Debbie and she said she would do a goodwill credit. I said goodwill? Why is it a goodwill credit when I placed the reservation correctly yet it was changed in their system. She was very protective of her employee Chase when I told her - he didn't seem to care about my issue or concerns.
I could go on - UNFORTUNATELY. I won't. The management of this hotel could care less about the customer. They have forgotten who pays their pay check. Not the hotel but the customer..... NO customers, NO paycheck.
I have been shocked at their concern for their employees feelings more than a customer.

I will never stay in this hotel, I canceled my reservation and will recommend that no one that I am affiliated with there - stay at this hotel.

This was such gross neglect of a potential customer, I still am looking for ways to have someone tell me that the customer is important to them.

Debbie Cowgill, Manager at Holiday Inn Univ of Memphis, responded to this review
3 November 2011
We have won the top award for Holiday Inn for the past eight years for customer service. We do everything we can to go the extra mile for every guest. Unfortunately, this guest confirmed a reservation on a prepaid reservation. Therefore, she was charged in advance in accordance to the stipulations for this highly discounted rate. The guest called very upset. I explained why she was precharged but she would not allow me to explain. I did offer to refund her money and change her reservation to a regular non-prepay reservation which I did even though she confirmed a non cancellable and non refundable reservation type.

I regret that we were unable to satisfy her. Our management team and entire staff do care about our customers. I hope you will not alow this isolated incident to keep you from selecting our hotel.

Hope to see you soon.

“Modern and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2009

I stayed at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis during a 3-day job interview in December, 2009. The hotel is clean, friendly, safe, and modern. My room was a suite, and I was told that all rooms in the hotel are suites. My room had two flat screen tvs, a separate sitting area, a kitchenette, comfortable beds, and a clean and modern bathroom. The in room coffee is hotel standard and the bathroom products were and upgrade on most. Fast, free, wireless internet was available in my room (and I presume throughout the hotel). The hotel is in a nice university neighborhood and close to all the downtown amenities. My only significant problem was a light but continuous noise in the room that I believe was related to the heating. Some might not be bothered by it at all, but I am a light sleeper and had to resort to ear plugs one night (I never stay away from home without some). That said, I was not bothered enough to ask for a new room.

I would be wary of staying at this hotel on busy weekends. There was very little activity the two nights I stayed, but the layout of the rooms is such that if there is a loud wedding reception or similar event going on in one of the ballrooms, many guest rooms will hear it loud and clear. If you are concerned, I'd suggest requesting a room as far away from the ballrooms as possible when you book or check in.

For a great breakfast, check out Brother Juniper's just a few blocks away. Apparently, it is a Memphis institution. The staff will direct you.

“Okay, but we'll try someplace else next time.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2009

We stayed Saturday and Sunday nights in May. We had two issues. First, our room was on the third floor and frankly that was probably not a good choice to be housed when a wedding was going on in a nearby ballroom. As you can guess, there was a lot of noise which was distracting. Secondly, when we turned in, we found the pillows on the beds were high and hard. Some people may like that but we didn't. I'd recommend if possible you bring your own pillows from home. The pamphlet in the room said to make sure if there is a problem, before we give them a bad review, that they be told so that they have an opportunity to make it right. We tolerated the noise and the pillows the first night, but the second night, a Sunday night when there were very few other guests in the hotel, and no wedding, I asked the guy at the front desk for other pillows and he said in no uncertain terms they had no other pillows, just those in the room (even though the info in the room said the hotel had a limited number of feather pillows). We found the place cavernous and a little spooky on Sunday night. The hotel was clean though. The parking gate was up the whole time we were there which sort of defeated the whole purpose of having a safety gate. There was no pool or hottub which would have been nice. There was a nice workout room. All and all, it was nice but we'll probably try somewhere else next time.
