“WARNING!!! HOTEL STAFF ARE... THIEVES???”

The hotel seemed to be what you would expect when paying 40 bucks a night... UNTIL our second night, when someone (who obviously had a key) tried to come in our room! The latch at the top of the door kept him from coming in, thank God, but did not deter him from standing there peering through the 2 inch gap the latch allowed him, even after I screamed "HEY!" I yelled at him again, to get out, and finally he shut the door without a word. When I called the front desk, the lady tried convincing me it was our imagination, then asked if I seen what he looked like. I called back 2 min later to ask who had a key to our room... her story changed to one about her hearing a couple quarreling (apparently with her super sonic hearing, since we were on the 5th floor) and she sent housekeeping to check on it. I angrily went down to the lobby to demand a factual explanation, and found that the lady had left to take housekeeping home... hmmm! I waited for her return, she stuck to the couple quarreling story and pretended not to understand english. I called customer service for super 8 upon returning home, they listened and told me I would hear from the manager. I received a very generic letter from him that basically said sorry for the inconvenience, we look forward to serving your hotel needs in the future. WHAAAT??? PLEASE heed this warning... we were two women traveling alone, and we would have left on the spot had we not had a .38 in the room with us, which laid right next to me on the bedside table the rest of the night. And, a sidenote: a man was complaining in the lobby the following morning about people trying to come in his room even with the do not disturb sign on his door. Unreal!

“Must be under new managment. A good price and value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2011

While this wasn't any peabody hotel this is what you would expect from a super eight. I didn't see one roach or rat during my stay. Front desk service could have been. better but they weren't awful. The only thing wrong with my room was the shower was a little ghetto you had to wiggle the knob and cross your fingers ha. But it was clean no exposed wires or anything I saw written here glad they cleaned their act up. And the location isn't bad the abandon buildings aren't senic but you're not in scary ghetto memphis. I would stay again.

“It's not that bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

I read some of the reviews of this hotel and I have to say, it ain't that bad. The hostel is basic and the service is a bit off, but it's cheap and fairly close to town. Our room had everything you might expect, inlcuding a microwave and a fridge, and the free breakfast, whilst minimal, was a nice touch. It could do with a lick of paint and some REAL flowers to give the place a more welcoming feel. The one maajor downside is that although it is fairly close to downtown it is not easy to walk and you'll be forced to get a cab or use their $3 shuttle service. If there are 3 or 4 of you it is cheaper to get a cab, whilst for 1 or 2 I would recommend their shuttle (But don't use it to go to Graceland as there is a free bus from downtown). As for the hotel overall? Good value

I've stayed in my share of one-star motels, but this was the worst. It was conveniently located right off I-55, but it was also in a very run-down area (complete with abandoned buildings) and felt kind of isolated and unsafe. I booked online through Hotwire, but if I had seen the place beforehand I never would have stayed here.

The room was somewhat dingy, the bed uncomfortable, and there was a lot of noise from outside (could have been the elevators - I didn't see a single other guest on my floor). This didn't bother me too much, but the mold in the shower did. The toilet stopped working on my first morning there, though the guy at the front desk was apologetic and had it taken care of immediately.

This is the only time I've ever considered moving to a different hotel even though I likely wouldn't be able to get my money back. Definitely a place to avoid.

IF ROACHES & RATS COULD TALK, THEY WOULD TELL YOUR CUSTOMERS TO STAY AWAY!!!!
What a DUMP!! FILTHY, FILTHY, FILTY.....hotel was stinky - the absolute worst experience I've ever had with a hotel. Requested a non-smoking room but the sheets had burns in them and the room smelled of smoke. Lots of mold in both of the rooms we stayed in - dirty carpet, peeling wallpaper AND paint, bugs, TV didn't work right, all lights didn't work. Even after requesting a different room, it wasn't any better - just as terrifying!! IF YOU BOOK ONLINE, NO REFUNDS!!!! And that was the reason why we stayed. ... Unless you like creppy crawlies things like roaches, rats, etc....RUG was so filthy, I would not walk on it without wear shoes or slippers. Complaining does not help - complained about first room (back side of the building) because we saw roaches at 11:00 P.M. - second room did not have working lights - went back and given a third room, not any better than the first....mold, dirt, filth, bugs, bed spread not clean, heater did not work as it should, leaky fauset, toilet handle broken, sometimes did not completely flush, exposed light and wiring above shower where it could be splashed by water. We would have left the first night - but guess what - no refund do to on line reservation and could not find other motel on late notice that was affordable and in the Memphis area.
I am notifying Super 8 corp. office and the Memphis dept of tourism to complain & I have a large number of pictures to support my claims. THIS MOTEL IS RUN BY 3rd world people as though it is located in a 3rd world country. When I checked out, I asked the manager if he has EVER inspected any of the rooms?? With a dumb founded look on his face, he said "no - Why?? The people who operate and run this DUMP don't care about cleanliness or you as a customer. I am going to my family doctor for a tetinus shot and antibiotics....just in case we might have caught some infection after staying in this hell hole!!!!
HIGH LIGHT OF OUR FIVE DAY STAY - GRACELAND TOUR - other notebles..........first ten minutes in Memphis, stopped at the vistors center for info - we got hit up by homeless beggars - same for BEAHL STREET AREA - couldn't walk downtown like we planned do to many requests for hand-outs.................SAD !!!!
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL EVER!!!!! Stay away from Super 8 in downtown Memphis/Graceland on Illinois Ave. Pictures on thier website is NOT what you get. They will gladly take your money and never apollogize for the 3rd world conditions.
