We have stayed in many guest houses, but we can say without question that Arduaine has topped the others for attention to detail, attentiveness and the welcome we received. Barbara and David are very friendly hosts and most knowledgeable about Wigtown, the Machars Peninsula and Galloway as a whole.
The bedroom was spacious and lovely, including a huge built in cupboard with plenty of hangers, one of our bugbears with other places. We slept soundly in the very spacious bed. Having a lounge to ourselves made us feel more at home than you usually do in a guest house where you are often confined to one room.
Breakfasts were lovely, using local produce and home baked bread, yummy! We took some bread home with us, it was so good!
We have visited Wigtown previously, and the local bookshops are a treat, but there is also plenty going on culturally. There are quite a few artists in residence and their work is excellent. Barbara and David are extremely impressive guides as to which artist lives and works where, very useful if something has caught your eye. We ourselves went home with a lovely piece of art from a local up and coming artist, Mike Abel, who paints and photographs the local landscape. There are many wonderful towns to visit locally, Port William, Whithorn, Gatehouse of Fleet and the artists’ town of Kirkcudbright
In summing up, we would heartily recommend Arduaine, and its charming hosts, Barbara and David to all.
