“What a warm welcom....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

We stayed for three nights and I can honestly say that I've never felt more welcome or been looked after so well. Ruth and Ian are friendly and helpful. Our rooms were warm and comfortable. The food was delicious and there was plenty of choice. It's a fantastic place to stay for anyone considering a birdwatching holiday or short break, as Loch Ryan and the Solway coast have many interesting birds. As well as the ones on the feeders in the garden. The Red Squirrels were good too! We look forward to our next stay at the Blue Peter Hotel.

“Home form Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2010

We have stayed at many locations throughout the country but none more welcoming than here.
Ruth and Ian are more than happy to recieve you and bend over backwards to make sure that all your needs are met.
The food and service are second to none, providing a range of homecooked comforting food prepared by Ruth's fair own hands.
Ian prides himself on his collection of Real Ales and rightly so! The couple have won various awards during their time as landlords including Scottish Pub of the Year! Quiet rightly so!
To sum it up there is a small brass plaque on the door to the lounge are reading:
"We are but a small place however our welcome is massive" I could not have worded it better!

“feels like you've arrived home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

We had a fantastic stay at the Blue Peter. The hotel is spotlessly clean and full of intersting collectables which we admired whilst sampling some real ale. In the morning we sat and watched a flurry of birds from our bedroom window and lost count of the species we spotted. If you stay on Tuesday evening they have a pub quiz - the locals are very friendly and invited us to join in with them. At the end of the quiz, Ruth serves up a platter of complimentary beef sandwiches and roasties, which went down a treat.
The food is delicious at the hotel and the servings are generous too!
I've been travelling up to Stranraer now for over 10 years and this is by far the best place I have stayed.

“Friendly and inviting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2010

We spent 4 nights at the Blue Peter having found the pub in the CAMRA Good Beer guide. It is in the village of Kirkcolm in a beautiful location near the shore of Loch Ryan, about 7 miles from Stranraer, and an ideal base for exploring NW Galloway. We were greeted warmly by Ian and Ruth and shown to our room. The en-suite facilities are a little cramped, as noted by other contributors, but this is inevitable in a modernised 17th century building and more than outweighed by the warmth, comfort and cleanliness of the room. The pub does not have it's own car park but there is a free car park with plenty of space almost opposite. The breakfasts and the evening meals are freshly cooked by Ruth to a high standards and portions are generous. The menu is straightforward with more than enough variety for a few nights stay. The bars are comfortable and the atmosphere very friendly (we were invited to join a pub quiz team on the first evening). Ian knows his real ale and there were 2 hand pump beers available during our stay, both beautifully kept. He also keeps and excellent range of pure malts. The prices for food and drink were very reasonable. Ian is very forthcoming with his local knowledge and when we told him that we were interested in local walks and sites of interest he was soon providing detailed guidance with the help of his ordnance survey map. The Blue Peter is a real 'home from home' and we would not hesitate to stay there again.

“A hidden gem.”

Booked this b&b after finding it on my husband's SATNAV on holiday in Ireland, realising that our ferry was not going to get into Scotland until 10pm and not wanting to face a 3 hour journey home in the dark. Really didn't know what to expect, but what awaited us was fabulous. Ian came out to greet us and tell my husband where to park and we were immediately shown to our rooms which were scrupulously clean and well stocked with tea and coffee. We were warmly welcomed into the bar and asked what time we would like breakfast the next morning! We all slept really well and our sojourn into the garden to see the birds and red squirrels was amazing. Breakfast was superb, freshly cooked and the scrambled eggs were very fluffy, not the rubbery substance you all too frequently experience. This was not a part of the world we were at all familiar with, but our stay at The Blue Peter has made us want to explore further and also partake in their evening menu.
