2 friends and ourselves took the Stevenson and Ballantrae suites at the end of January.
Arrived seperately in darkness and greeted with clear unpolluted skies with the lighthouse beam illuminating all around.
We all agreed then we had made the right choice.

Very friendly greeting by genuinely friendly people who made every effort to make us welcome.

The suites are huge by any standards and furnished to a highspec.
Stayed two nights and extensive menu changed for both nights.
Food was to a high standard and staff were very efficient and personable.

A most enjoyable experience.

Room Tip: Stevenson and Ballantrae suites are huge, each sleep 4 easily. Excellent panoramic views of sea, bin...

This is one of only two or three lighthouse hotels in the British Isles, and for personal reasons I wanted to stay in one of them at the end of January for our Silver Wedding anniversary. It was quite a long way - about 230 miles from home - but well worth the drive, especially coming over the hill in the dark and seeing the light for the first time. Naturally, I read a lot of the reviews before I booked it and was subsquently baffled by the few negative ones. Yes, the rooms are smaller than many hotels (we stayed in the Mull of Kintyre room) - hello, it's a lighthouse. The dining room is an odd shape, er, it's a lighthouse. But I felt these things were positives and only enhanced its character. But the views of the sea, and the light at night were fantastic, because, yes you guessed it, it's a lighthouse.
The food is out of this world, even the breakfast was worth a mention. But one of the best features was the service. Unfortunately our car broke down but the staff at the hotel couldn't have been more helpful, arranging for a mechanic to come and look at it, ordering taxis etc.
It is quite pricey, but for a special occasion I felt it was well worth it, and would definitely go again. If there was a downside, it is quite remote, but then....................it's a lighthouse.

“Different”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

A birthday surprise stay & like another review we arrived in the dark so it wasn't until the morning we could really appreciate the windswept rugged location. With a near gale blowing all weekend it was very atmospheric but we still managed the coastal walk (no path) and staying in the Ballantrae Suite, the 200m walk to the restaurant! The suite was lovely, very warm, comfy beds & a relaxing environment with those Saturday papers, (until we prised ourselves out for the walk). The food was just right, well cooked, well presented but not too fussy, wines were also good. For a mid January stay I wasn't surprised we were the only people staying but the service was excellent.

Room Tip: The suites are bigger rooms than the doubles in the actual hotel but you are in a lighthouse!

“An excellent honeymoon experience.”

My husband and I arrived at the hotel after what can only be described as the drive from hell (Dumfries, actually) in darkness, so it was not until the following morning that we were able to appreciate the awesome view from the Lighthouse Suite, a self-contained apartment converted from an outbuilding. We had a delicious dinner made from local produce in the cosy dining room. On the Sunday we decided to have a car-free day and lounged about in our suite, reading the Sunday papers and listening to music at a volume not possible at home. Even the local cattle were friendly and in the hotel itself, nothing was too much trouble - especially when the DVD player in our suite refused to either play or eject our DVD - it arrived by post about a week later when we had returned to normality ... i.e. forgotten the incident but the whole hotel experience is unforgettable and we are desperate to return as soon as possible.

We actually stayed in the hotel in October 2010 however I have not had access to my Trip Advisor account till now.

“Magical!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

and I stayed in the Loch Ryan suite for 3 nights and we had a wonderful time! The suite was very comfortable, warm and cosy and the views stunning. The staff and the food were exceptional and we would recommend unreservedlythis hotel. Not for children as there are not the facilities to amuse such, the hotel is a perfect hideaway for anyone wanting a relaxing and battery-recharging few days! We will DEFINITELY be back!

Room Tip: Choose a suite as the rooms may be a little cramped for some people's taste!
