Visited this hotel on a mid week break with shearings, excellent value for money. Main areas appeared to have been recently decorated. Weather was bad and rain was coming in through windows and ceiling in dining room. room was cold but extra heaters available if needed. Food was very good but seating arrangements a little strange, never sat at the same table twice. hotel in a lovely position overlooking the town.

This was a trip well worth the excellent experience. We booked it for my birthday, and friends also came and enjoyed it bas much as we did. This will certainly be on our books to come here again. We enjoyed the trips out and about, but we also walked along the cliff tops on either side of the hotel and the veiws were to die for.

In many ways a typical Shearings hotel - a traditional old clifftop hotel, evocative of holidays a century ago, brought back to life by the company and offering a very comfortable stay with excellent value for money. The location is magnificent, with a pathway down to the harbour, and the start of the Southern Upland Way coast to coast path a few yards away. Galloway is wonderful with its shining star Glentrool Forest Park half an hour away. Portpatrick is a long journey for most people, but is well worth it for a long weekend break or a week of Scottish hospitality.

Hotel old and large but compared to many shearings hotels in good repair and decoration. Rooms are a decent size but very cold. Heaters are provided but take a good while to make any impression. A hot water bottle is useful for warming the bed. Food is of an acceptable standard however the seating arrangements are very confusing, changing with every meal. Staff do not seem to be efficiently organized going in and out of the kitchen an many occasions with nothing in their hands. They also seem to stand around a lot doing nothing. As a result waiting times of up to 20 minutes can happen between courses. The public lounges have comfortable seating but with dark painted walls and wooden slats at the windows rather than curtains they are very dull and depressing. A revamp to inject a feeling of comfort and cheerfullness would be welcome.
Portpatrick itself is pretty, clean place. Very small with no attractions where you can spend a little time, other than a few local walks. Transport is essential, preferably your own as local services are not up to much. Their are a number of interesting places to visit in the surrounding area, nearly all of which closed for the winter months. There are very few shops and several of those that are in evidence are only open on a couple of dfays a week.
