What a joy. After reading a couple of the reviews we were a little wary but some people obviously need to understand Portpatrick=Holiday Village=Small Friendly,Warm, Welcoming Hotels=Thoroughly Enjoyable Stay = Great time had by all!
A mixed group from around the world we gathered at the Mount Stewart to enjoy the Open golf. Whilst the golf was great our stay at the hotel was even better. If you want five or four star faceless luxury then book that, the Mount Stewart doesn't adverrtise themselves as that but they should advertise a five star welcome. Rooms clean and comfortable yes some were a little small but if your on holiday are you going to spend all your time in your room? Of course not, not when the food downstairs is so good with a great selection to choose from and a bar and locals so wlecoming and friendly. Diane was great at helping us organise some golf for ourselves also at great prices.

We have travelled to many golf destinations and stayed in great hotels but after a while they are all the same and lack character. The Mount Stewart staff were always friendly and welcoming and not because of rigid corporate training, it was because they were really nice people. An excellent holiday.

Just back from a wonderful stay we had a beautiful seaview room we had been upgraded from a smaller back room.
The staff were excellent and very attentive I beleive this is a family run hotel. Food could not be faulted the visitors book is full of compliments for the food.
We enjoyed a bottle of wine on the terrace looking straight over to Ireland whilst listening to live music !
Would most deffinately go back but nearly didn't go at all due to the latest review, which I could not dis-agree with more.
The only draw back is the slight hill but the views are worth it.

29 May 2009 | Trip type: Family

We were a party of 7 not one of the rooms we were allocated was a sea veiw - we stayed 3 nights. We were a family group meeting up in Portpatrick with grandma and the three year old. The rooms were clean but cramped. My husband and I were in a room at the back that had a double bed and 2 singles - what a shame without the two single beds we could have had a lounge area or at least some room to host the rest of the family group. The rooms were clean and the shower pretty primitive with no instructions on how to work. This is not the hotel for that sort of group as there is nowhere you can meet up except at breakfast to relax and chat. The bar area is a front bar available to residents and non residents and is not conducive to relaxing and chatting with a cup of tea unless we wanted to sit at tables and eat a meal or drink. Non of our rooms could comfortably host the whole group so we ended up in the Crown (lovely food), and one night we were permitted to meet up in the reception area of one of the hotels on the hill which was fantastic - beautiful view wonderful lounge area and bar service - shame we had not picked that hotel.

The Mount Stewart is a lovely old building but its decor is a bit over the top - too much decoration and a mixed furniture old a new (a bit like a beach shack). If bought back to its former glory would be magnificent. All a bit tired and where it has been redecorated a bit over the top. When we arrived we rang the bell and no one came, so finally my husband went out the back who was able to yell up the stairs to the cleaning girls who showed us rooms and suggested that we could get a sea view for one of our group the next day - this never eventuated - pity would have been great for grandma who was stuck back at the hotel at times cos she could not walk - so pretty dire for her with a tv that didn't work and a shower that without instructions they could not work. The staff - the cleaning girls are lovely, but none of the rest of the staff are that interested in the guests they are just doing their jobs, even at breakfast the main objective is to get you served and out when you ask for runny eggs they are over cooked. Finally it is very clean in the rooms and not the worst place to stay and not too expensive. Portpatrick is just wonderful this is our second time to the town and just love it.

Arrived as agreed with owner Diane at 11am to find the room not ready and staff saying they weren't expecting us! Great start NOT!, Staff went into kitchen area and were discussing the fact they had no keys to let us in and as usual they couldn't contact the owners, their choice language was not the best! Eventually a young girl came after us and said they had the key to our room, she showed us to an attic room which was dark, drab and in need of desperate up dating (the chest of draws looked like it had collapsed more than once!), the room was small with a sloped roof, ok if you are only 4'6" tall, the room was not en suite(which we had booked), the bathroom was across the hall. When I told the staff that this wasn't good enough their reply was, "well that's how it is!!" Well actually that's NOT how it was as we left, we walked down onto the front and found a room in another hotel for 3 nights with a seaview, where the staff were welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. I thinik we had a lucky escape with this one. Eventually after we had checked into our new hotel we went back to collect our car etc the male owner of the Mont Stewart came to speak to us but he did not seem suprised by what had happened.

22 Nov 2008 | Trip type: Friends getaway

We were a party of 12 staying at the Mount Stewart in May 08. Dianne and the staff at the hotel could not have been nicer, food was great, golf courses excellent, the views on a warm clear night are breathtaking and Port Patrick is an fine place for a good night out.
