“The hotel which has never moved on!”

We stayed in the 'honeymoon suit', (told it was the best room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) looked fantastic on the web site! Damp on the walls, paper peeling away, smelled really dampand this clung to our clothes. Too cluttered, dusty, dirty cups, old electrical equipment. Bathroom was a nightmare, the 'high tec' shower/bath was dirty and totally out of place for the type of hotel. We needed all three heating appliances to keep warm. We seemed to be an irrelevance!
The evening meal was very disappointing, waited what seemed an eternity to eat. The vegetarian choice of a penne pata with goats cheese failed miserably as the goats cheese was left out! Cost and star rating vastly exagerated! Never again

Thank you for your feedback. I just wanted to let you know that the hotel will have a new management team in place for the 2011 season. Chris and Sue Walker and Douglas McDavid who currently own and run The Best Western Selkirk Arms Hotel in Kirkcudbright will be operating the hotel from 28th March. We are looking forward to moving the hotel forward.

“We totally love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

This was our fourth visit: we think the Baron's Craig is wonderful! The rooms (along with the owner and his son!) are packed with character and charm, and the sun terrace (taking in views of the coast, the woodlands and the hotel grounds - complete with red squirrels and rabbits) is the perfect spot for a glass of wine or pint of beer.

“Absolutely Fantastic”

My third visit, my parents' fourth visit, my siblings' third visit and my husband's first. As always David was extremely accommodating and we had an absolutely fantastic time. Dinner for 12 was delicious and we were all eating at the same time with nobody waiting around. Even though he was let down by his bar staff, the service was great. It may not be quick enough for some people, but when you want to enjoy a leisurely break in a beautiful hotel with stunning views, then this is the place for you.

“Faulty Towers come to life!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

Our entire stay (1 night) was, in retrospect, a comedy of errors. My wife and I had booked accomodation for a stay of 3 nights. The reports on Tripadvisor were mixed but we had stayed at this hotel before (in 2006) and it was OK, so we decided to take a chance.
Confusion started as soon as we arrived. The girl who checked us in was unaware that we had a booking, showed us several unsuitable rooms, and then finally twigged that we had a booking and sorted us out.

The room itself was fine but had a complicated shower/sauna/jaccuzi device in the bathroom which required a degree in hydraulic engineering to operate successfully, something we did not manage.

We declined to have dinner there (£25 per head for 2 courses). In our opinion, the hotel is missing out on much potential meal business by not offering bar meals in the evening.

The main problem arose after we settled down for the night. The hotel was not busy, with only one other couple staying that night. However, I could not get to sleep for the incessant and noisy chattering of what must have been members of the staff. This went on and on and on. The only relief came when the fire alarm went off at 2am, caused, to be fair, by an external power supply problem. The chatter continued thereafter until about 3.10am, when it mercifully stopped.

Breakfast was poor, continental only, with a small selection .

My wife and I agreed that we should leave immediately after breakfast .
In many ways, it was a great pity. The hotel is situated in a stunning location, in an area with great potential for up-market tourism. The owner however needs to get his act together, to provide and deliver the quality and extent of product that the area needs.

“Please don't eat or stay here - 5 star prices for a 0 star hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

This hotel is in a beautiful location and still has some wonderful period features, including superb views of the garden and sea. Sadly this is all off set by non existent service, terrible food ,a filthy dining room and 1970s delapidated facilities. We stayed in room 8, which is advertised as having a sea view and four poster bed at a cost of £140/night plus £25/hd for dinner. It was impossible to see the sea view as the windows were so dirty. The promised luxury toiletries consisted of two small bars of lux soap! The furniture appeared to have come from a car boot sale and the bed sheets were threadbare. During our stay the only staff we met were the chef ,who also acted as hotel receptionist and waiter and one waitress on Friday evening who appeared in dirty clothes and had little or no experience of bar or waitress work. Our steaks were cremated, the vegetables consisted of 1 tablespoon of reheated leftovers and the creme brulee was about a week old. The wine list consisted of about 50 choices but the waitress pointed out that they could only find about 5 in stock...perhaps the rest were drunk by the waiter who could be heard shouting in the kitchen! Breakfast the next morning was worse - no bowls for cereal, they had ran out of fruit, yoghurt was Tesco value pots and the cooked breakfast was a greasy mess with a half cooked egg on top and one slice of cold toast per person. At no stage during our stay were we asked if we were happy and the chef/receptionist appeared determined to get rid of us as quickly as possible the next morning.
