“A hidden gem with exceptional value for money!”

A great wee hotel hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Every member of staff we met, from the receptionist to bar staff/waiting staff and managers were extremely polite and helpful. It really does make a huge difference being afforded such courtesy as opposed to some horror stories encountered elsewhere. But not here, honestly, it sometimes felt as if they had a set amount of times they had to chat with customers to make sure everything was to their satisfaction - which is no bad thing! And it was effortless. They really did appear as if they were genuinely interested in us.

The room itself was very nicely decorated and had everything we needed for our stay. The mattress and pillows were a bit thin but our sleep was actually more comfortable than we thought it would be. Although, it could have been better if someone would please give the hinges on the door at the stairwell on the 2nd floor a quick spray with some WD40 as it squeaked really loudly every time it was opened! A nice big tv on the wall along with some tea/coffee making facilities (with lovely biscuits as well of course!) made for a relaxing time. Our view out over the clyde was quite nice as well.

On to another great feature of this hotel. The food. Simply amazing!!! First class food from our 3 course dinner to our full Scottish breakfast, all cooked to perfection. Absolutely faultless. Compliments to the chef indeed!

All in all a great hotel which we would definitely recommend to everyone and to which we will definitely return to in the future. Especially if they keep up the great value for money deals!

p.s. one tiny moan I did have was that the bar had ran out of crisps. Not a big deal at all but when your pregnant wife has a craving, then these cravings usually need to be fulfilled!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to log your review. I am absolutely delighted to note your very positive comments and please be assured I will pass them onto all of the team. It is allways reassuring when we achieve our goals which are all surrounding excellent customer care and excellent quality food.
The Door on the corridor has now duly been silenced. I apologise that there were no crisps available and I am aware of the Mattress and Pillow situation they are high on the agenda to be replaced.
Once again I thank yopu for your review and look forward to welcoming both of you back to the Rosslea in the not to distant future.

Kindest Regards

Don

Stayed overnight on the 4th very warm welcome from Hazel at reception. A great room with a lovely view of the marina and sea, spacious and very very clean. Booked dinner in the restaurant as on my previous visits I found the food to be fantastic. On discovering they had a new chef since my last visit I was hoping it would be as good. There was no need for hope as if anything the menu was very impressive and the food even better.
I had the Pigeon to start, my partner had the Chowder, we both opted for Steak for our main which were cooked to perfection and extremely tasty. I had Sticky toffee pud while my husband decided to have cheese. The Sticky toffee was the best ever and a must try for anyone staying.

Decided to extend our stay as there were fireworks and live entertainment planned for the following evening.

Day 2 - chilled out during the day, booked an early dinner which was every bit as good and tasty as the night before. The service in the restaurant from Alana and Lynn in particular was very friendly and efficient. The fireworks on the front lawn were great as was the entertainment in the bar where all the guests joined in with the singing!!!! including me!!!!!

All in all another fabulous weekend in what is becoming my favourite hotel in the UK.

Only one little niggle - not the most comfortable mattress but did not take away from the warmth, professionalism and friendliness offered by all at this wonderful Hotel.

Room Tip: Sea views are worth the upgrade. Dinner in the restaurant a must. Rated leisure and can't remov...

“Not as you expect............Dissapointing!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

I have to say this is not what I expected after reading the reviews. Arrived at hotel reception area very unwelcoming and needs updating. Reception staff had to check our room was ready despite arriving at 14.30pm which I found strange as this should of been checked before arrival. I had paid extra for a seavew room which you could only see the sea from one window as we were one floor up and the other window was the side of the buliding view. Room was like a oven when we opened the door and had to open the windows everything seemed fine at that time. Unpacked our suitcase for our 2 night stay!!! Went down hill from there, went to bar for some drinks and were the only two in there.............barman nice and friendly!!!

We are both smokers and I know that hotels are non smoking but do provide shelters and ashtrays!!!!!!! There were none of these here asked reception staff and got told we just smoke outside the door where the planters at the front of the hotel were full of cigarette butts not nice but I suppose all smokers put their cigarettes out there as no ashtrays!!!

Dinner was nice but found portions very small for price 6 chips stacked on plate, 1 small piece of haddock, 1 small piece of seabass, 1 king prawn with some salad. I am not a big eater but had to have crisps when I went back to room as I was still hungry.

There is no music in the bar only sky sports which you do not want to sit and watch as you want to relax and enjoy your holiday. A bit of back ground music would of been nice nothing to loud as they had music in reception. Bar lacked atmosphere. Although staff were nice and friendly.

Went to room early as bored to be quite honest. Bed was 2 single beds put together and the springs dig into you. The sheet on my bed was stained, I went to reception to complain about these and was told this should not of happened. Sheet changed no...........had to sleep on a towel. Was wakened all night with the 15 mins chimes of the church if you are a light sleeper this place is not for you!!

Breakfast nice no complaints. We told reception again about bed, sheet and chimes....never offered to change our room so we left that morning. Very dissapointed we have had to come home a day early as could not sleep in that bed or listen to that chimes another night!!! Think the reception staff could of been more customer service orientated maybe need some coaching from their manager. As reception staff did not try and solve things and persuade us to stay.

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to write your response. It is through guest feedback positive or negative that we get the opportunity to improve our service as we strive to ensure all our guests have a very enjoyable visit.
I do apologise that in this instance we have failed to impress you.
I am conducting my own investigation into the circumstances surrounding your issues.
It would appear that Housekeeping let us all down and I will ensure the appripriate action is taken to avoid an re-occurence.
I am at a bit of a loss mind you when you state that the room is not a sea view, The Marina, and the Gareloch are clearly inview from both windows. I have also been informed that you were given a no quibble refund of the upgrade charge for a Sea View room.
Chef passes on his apologies that you felt the portions were not substantial enough to satisfy you, had you only notified one of the waiting staff we could have resolved immediately.
I am looking into this matter in depth because the member of staff on reception stated quite catagoricaly that a change of rooms was offered but refused by yourself.
I have asked the question of the local Vicar in the past about the Church Bells, he told me in no uncertain term that they have rung every 15minutes for over 300 hundred and even the second world war did not stop them. So I'm afraid nothing can be done about it. Many of our guests actually quite like it, and others don't notice.
I also take on board your comments re the mattresses and will be instigating a replacement programme. The Hotel was taken over at the begining of July by BDL Hotels and there are several upgrade projects now underway.
I would like to be given the opportunity to restore your faith in our product and would be delighted if you would contact me directly at the Hotel.

Kind Regards

Don

“Marjorie & Derek”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We stayed at the hotel Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October 2011. On first arriving we were given a very warm welcome by Beverley on reception. Alana introduced herself and said she would be serving us at dinner that evening, and she was extremely helpful, offering to show us around the hotel and give us some local history about the hotel etc. Both ladies were very courteous, and had a really good sense of humour, and our first impression was excellent. Our room had been upgraded to a junior suite, and was very clean, giving us a wonderful view of the Firth of Clyde. Our evening meal was first class, with locally sourced food - (well done to the chef)!! and excellent service from all staff. Breakfast was very good and service was prompt and efficient. We hoped that the food would be of the same standard on our second evening, and it proved to be first class once again. The Manager, Don came to chat with us at the end of the meal, and we were happy to offer him the very positive feedback, and asked him to let his staff know how helpful and welcoming they were.
I would definitely recomment this hotel to anyone who likes excellent food, excellent service and staff who have a wonderful sense of humour. (Regards to Rob who googled a 'village' for us, completely voluntarily and this meant so much to us both) Hope to return !

Room Tip: Room number 11 gives great views of Firth of Clyde and we were very pleased with it.

“Not quite the full experience!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

We stayed on a one night special DB&B special here .After actually finding the hotel -we went up the wrong drive and landed at the Yacht Club!,we thought the front of the building looked quite nice with the gardens and conservatory.Unfortunately you go round the back of the hotel and the main door is lurking there among the piles of dead leaves in the rear car park.Hmmm.

The reception area is dark and not immediately welcoming, but we were greeted by staff in an acceptable manner and after a bit of discussion and searching at the computer they finally gave us a room on the first floor. There is no lift in the hotel which I queried re- possible disabilities, and they replied that they had downstairs rooms.

Our room was a bit of a surprise as it is done up a la Premier Inn and some how with the age of the building we expected something different. However it was a good size and quite smart, everything in working order. The mattresses on the joined twin beds need replacing and the pillows are so thin.Hubby needs a high firm pillow so we asked right away for another pillow.NO PROBLEM.

Well it did seem to be a problem .We asked for the extra pillow mid afternoon and despite reminding them about tea time ,he had to go back at 9.30 and ask again as we wanted to go to bed soon!

We went down to dinner early at 6.30 and ordered a drink in the bar .The barman didn't know how to switch the machine back on to agitate the Guinness and it all seemed a little shambolic, but we eventually got our drinks and so to dinner.
The waitress, very nice and chatty ,the food beautifully presented on long /unusual plates a la haute cuisine, but despite there only being 3 tables at dinner we were not finished our dinner till nine o'clock.
The food itself a little disappointing ,my chicken not terribly warm and very bland,my husband's steak not really cooked medium rare as ordered(too much blood),and one half of it inedible gristle. He kept at it ,but was constantly having to spit pieces out, surreptitiously sneaking them back onto the side of his plate.
We waited more than 30 minutes on dessert that took us 5 mins or less to eat.Luckily we had nowhere else to go that evening ,as 2hours 30 mins for a meal is way too slow.Good job they were not busy or we'd still be there !

After our meal we were presented with the bill for the meal and drinks although we were on the meal included deal.Where is the communication? We got it sorted out and so back to our room and the key had de-activated and wouldn't let us in!Back down to the desk ,OK try again, access granted only find that still no aforementioned pillow ,so back down goes hubby.Beginning to see a pattern here?Well, we were on a special rate but I'm glad I wasn't paying any more for all these niggles.

Breakfast was OK and the conservatory very nice, but the bacon was white and undercooked looking and the black pudding not that nice either.
Not the full experience, socks need pulling up here and there at this hotel for me ,sorry.

Room Tip: front of hotel offers view of the sea loch

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and share your experience. I must say I am disappointed to note that there were several negative aspects of your visit. Please accept my sincere apologies.
Unfortunately our entrance is at the rear of the hotel beside the car park and is in a sheltered cul de sac, during the autumn the leaves do gather here constantly, we sweep and blow them twice daily but as we are surrounded by large deciduous trees the leaves can be quite a problem for the four weeks of fall.

I apologise that the service delivered to you with regards to an additional pillow was poor, this was clearly an oversight on our behalf and I can assure you the team members know my views on these matters.

I am surprised and disappointed that you found the food to be below standard as we have been receiving great feedback since the arrival of our new Head Chef some months ago now. Indeed other guests in the restaurant on the same evening extended their visit as a result of their experience. All our food is prepared and cooked from fresh and to order which depending on the menu choice can take time to serve. With regards to the steak being under cooked had this been brought to attention of the waitress at the time we could have remedied the problem immediately.

Once again I apologise for our shortfall in enhancing your experience and thank you for your comments as it is through feedback such as this we can continue to develop and improve our product.

Yours Sincerely

Don McGregor
