“Watched an Osprey hunting in the Loch from the Bedroom Window!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

This was a stopover on our way out to the Hebrides, so just a one night stay.

Location:
Conveniently located just a few miles away from Tarbet and at the head of Loch Long. Its situated on the mainn road which though not busy by uirban standards is quite busy with quite high speed and heavy traffic which can be heard through the night.
There is off-road parking.
Bedrooms at the front have a lovely view down Loch Long but are noisy due to the road. The benefit however is being able to see an Osprey diving for its breakfast just 100 metres away in the loch.
This is an ideal walking location so a few day walks in the hills are easily achieved from this location.

Meals:
The Rowantree Bank does not do eveing meals, however the Village Inn is just 500 metrers away and does excellent eveing meals, and local beer.
Breakfast was a hearty affair with plenty of choice and friendly staff. I ate smoked salmon and scrambled egg, Best friend had a vegetarian cooked breakfast. Both were excellent.

Rooms:
The excellence of the breakfast was offset by the standard of the rooms, the furnishings and bed linen were inexpensive and worn, the bathroom dated. There was a damp stain on the ceiling. The shower seal was mouldy.

This will probably be addressed in the near future with ongoing refurbishments.

There isn't a resident's lounge which may be handy if there's a large group of you out walking and need to do some evening planning.

The propietor is friendly and does a good job, however the rooms need a little more effort and a bit more money spending to make it really acceptable.

Room Tip: Rooms at thye back are quieter, the front ones have views!

“Disgusting, avoid at all costs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

The room was approximately 12ft x 8ft 6ins with no sitting chairs, 2 x 3ft beds pushed together, a door through to the en-suite and an old television perched on top of a wardrobe. The bed heads were across the small dimension leaving less than 18” for bedside cabinets either side of the bed. One of the cabinets had tea making facilities and the electric kettle. The room was poorly ventilated with heavy condensation on the window and mould in evidence on the walls and ceiling.
The fire alarm was oozing a brown liquid
The general decor was appalling with wallpaper coming off and cobwebs around the lights. The bedding looked “tired” and of dubious cleanliness and the pillows had little or no substance.
The light switch for the en-suite is located behind the door. The door handle was fixed top and bottom with nuts and bolts both with dangerously protruding threads. In the en-suite, there was a towel rail hanging off the wall and the shower area looked disgusting. On closer inspection, there was a split in the shower tray showing black gunge, a filthy plug-hole and staining in the tray.
The concern about overall cleanliness prompted a closer investigation of the bed. Lifting the bottom sheet revealed black dust and bodily emission stains and wider staining around the perimeter of the mattress.
The laminated flooring had worrying gaps and was uneven.
A truly atrocious experience. We had booked for 3 days but left as soon as possible the first morning

“POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2010

I wouldnt normally do this as this may effect someones livelyhood, the feeling of" being had" compelled me though. the room we had was plagued by the smell of sewage and the reek of septic tank. notice as you walk in that every plug socket has an ambi pur air freshner plugged in. Digusting sweet smell that fails to mask the smell of someone elses bum bullets and the alarmingly strong smell of septic tank! When i mentioned it, i was dissapointed the owner didnt acknowledge it. The air freshners dont lie at least. I couldnt fault the view or the service. but on a stroll around the village, i noticed many more nicer looking B&B's and wish i had spent the extra money (which wasnt much). i hardly slept because of the smell, it had permeated the bedding and curled my toes. It was very strong in the corridor too. BEWARE OF ROOM 3!!!!!

“Not for light sleepers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

The B&B opens right onto the road, with a small private car park at the side. While the views are stunning across the loch, there is an intermittant stream of lorries all through the night, just far enough apart to allow you to begin to drift off before the next one rattles the windows. Take ear plugs? The bed was comfortable, but altogether the room was rather small, and the bathroom even smaller, with only space for a cloakroom-sized basin.
Breakfast was pretty good - all the usual options including smoked salmon. Unfortunately we didn't meet the hosts due to a hospitalisation.
We ate at the hotel down the road where they have an arrangement with the management. Dinner was mass catering for coach parties, but as such OK and good value.

“best bed and breakfast Ive visited in ages!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2009

Me and my partner stayed for one night on a walking trip in Scotland, this b&b was the most friendly, warm and homely place we've stayed in for a long time, the location was stunning, cracking views over the loch, on top of all this the owners are fantsatic hosts who could not do enough for you, we would definately recomend to anyone looking to stay at a b&b in Arrochar, I'll certainly be going back. Meant to say the breakfasts are top notch too, really sets you up for a day in the hills.
