I wouldn't return.
Being ex locals (both my husband and I lived on the island for over 20 years) we really want to see business on the island flourish. I'd read some of the poor reviews on here and spoke to some of our friends still living on the island and if I'm honest I was undecided about the Glendale. However we required a family room and the weekend we were down they were in short supply so we decided that we would give this place a go regardless of the lacklustre response we got from the locals.
When myself and my children arrived we were shown to the wrong room by our host. We had booked two adjoining rooms with a bathroom between them. We were shown to a single room with a double and a single bed, nice room but would have been cramped with the travel cot. In the hosts defence this was quickly remedied once I had explained my husband was held up at work and would be joining us later.
Our room was at the rear of the building, still bright and clean though not the excellent standard I would have expected from a 4* B&B but pleasant enough. The door lock was temperamental and impossible to do one handed while carrying a baby! My only other complaint about the room was it wasn't exactly as described. The bathroom does not sit between the rooms as we were lead to believe but the door to it is actually right next to the bunkbeds where my son was sleeping and being an internal bathroom the extractor fan is fairly noisy so I wouldn't recommend this set up for light sleepers. Luckily my son would sleep through a firework display so not a problem for us.
The lounge area is amazing, Huge and bright with stunning views over the bay. There is even a little fridge outside which was a godsend for us as my daughter cant have dairy and gave us a place to keep her soya milk.
The breakfasts were out of this world. Between us we managed to sample just about everything on the menu. I can honestly recommend the haddock fish cakes. I was saddened to over hear the host tell another table that none of the produce was local and actually came from Paisley as it was cheaper (This did not sit well with my husband who used to work for one of the local butchers!!!)
So what let this B&B down? Well to be honest it was the Host. He wasn't particularly welcoming, he didn't introduce himself and his attitude was terrible.
My husband returned to the news that our bed was soiled and this ' is not tolerated and the demand for an extra £25 for changing the sheets. Now as our daughter was only on the bed when she came out the shower and was supervised at all times (High beds and babies don't mix as any parent can tell you) so we know she never soiled the bed I can only attribute the soiling to a leaky sippy cup but if that was the case we never noticed.
I can't help feeling that at £90 per night and extra £25 to change some sheets is a bit OTT. The threat of it being £60 if it happened again and the Hosts confrontational manner did NOT sit well with my husband and had we not being attending a family wedding with our 2 children we would not have still been there.
I wanted to be able to come on here and rubbish the poor reviews but in all honesty I find I can't. I left the Glendale with the honest feeling that the Host doesn't like children and that we were nothing more than an inconvenience rather than welcome guests. That said I did notice that he went out of his way to be lovely to another couple at breakfast bringing them additional food and chatting non stop to them. If your face fits I guess.
If your a couple looking for stunning views then fine. If your looking for a family friendly welcoming experience may I recommend the B&B a few doors up where my friend and his wife stayed with their 5 kids and they had a fantastic experience. The Glendale is too hit or miss to risk a family holiday.
Room Tip: go for a room at the front of the building, the rear rooms have no view and can be a little noisey
