“Certainly Different”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

This was the second stop on our holiday of Scotland. From the outside, the hotel looks in need of decoration. Inside, it was dated although our room was clean and comfortable.
The evening meal was served in what was also the bar. On enetering the hotel, I notcied what looked like a function room and I wonder whether this is used as the restaurant when the hotel was full, which it wasn't on our viist.
Peter the owner seems to be receptionist, bar man and waiter. This meant we waited 40 minutes for our main course to be served. The meal itself was good.
Breakfast was served in another room and, again, it was only Peter who seemed to do all the work.
On our second day, a girl also helped in the restaurant.

“A nice stay and good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011 via mobile

There are some starkly contrasting reviews here so thought it might be useful to add a recent one.

Obviously the hotel is a work in progress with the current owners making up over time for some years of neglect. That said it's perfectly clean and comfortable.

The breakfast room being an obvious example of the tasteful & contemporary look they are going for.
The food and service was good over our 3 days.

We booked late for the bank holiday and stayed in the family room. It's very clean and comfortable - actually 2 rooms one with a bunkbed and a single bed, the other with a double.

Plenty of room for our 3 young children to play and they all slept well.

There is not a huge amount to do locally after some walking, but as a base it was good. Inveraray is maybe 20 mins. Tarbert 25 mins with a couple of good restaurants - the starfish and the anchorage (sea bed). Kilmartin is similar and Oban an hour away - enjoyable drive.

If you are looking for a base and have your days planned you can't go wrong at this price.

“Fabulous hotel”

On arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome from Peter the owner of the hotel. Our room was of a high standard, spotlessly clean, tea/coffee making facilities, the bathroom and toilet facilities were equally spotless and well stocked with soap, towel, bath/shower gel etc. We spent our evenings in the hotel bar chatting with friendly local people and fellow guests. We enjoyed a lovely home cooked meal which was well presented and politely served. The hotel is well placed for visitors to drive down the Mull of Kintyre which we did, visiting the lovely port of Tarbert and then on to Cambeltown (we wanted to visit the Lady Linda McCartney Memorial Garden). The weather was also kind to us which was a bonus. We would gladly recommend the hotel to our friends and look forward to staying there in the future. Thank you Peter for your generous hospitality.

“Basil Fawlty WITHOUT the humour”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

From the moment we stepped into the hotel right up to the moment that we checked out , not ONCE did the owner (Peter) smile at us or our 3 girls! His whole demeanour was humourless and insipid and myself and husband felt unwelcome. The hotel itself is lovely (yes with an 1950's feel!!!) and could do with a much-needed revamp but we just wanted a place to stay that was clean, friendly and welcoming. Clean was all we got. When my husband tried to engage in a conversation with Basil (sorry Peter!!) he was cut short with a very abrupt yes or no and was generally rude. The pinacle of the stay was just after we had finished our food in the bar with the children we began to relax with a few drinks as we were the only residents in the entire hotel and a surly, local regular on his own (no wonder!!) complained about our children in the bar. This left us with a sour taste in our mouths as the owner clearly panders to the whim of a local who buys a couple of pints each night over the happiness of paying guests. Good food, gorgeous location and lovely waitress Shona, but would not recomend. (Unless you "look" as if you own a yacht somewhere in the Med then I am sure Basil would give you his undivided attention.....................!!)

“We said we would go back and we did!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

We returned again to the Lochgair on our way to the Island of Gigha, and found the hotel every bit as good as it was the last time we stayed there in July 2010.

The accommodation, food and service is as good as you will get in the West Coast of Scotland, and we recommend this as a good stopping off place.
