“Beautiful views, friendly staff, lovely food and fantastic activities”

Beautiful views, friendly staff, lovely food and fantastic activities for children and adults. It was too windy for sailing on the beautiful wooden boat ‘Oigh Niseach’, so we will have to save that for our next visit. Canoeing on ‘home loch’ was suggested as an alternative, and the whole family really enjoyed that. The children (age 5 & 4) were introduced to climbing on the Sunday morning, and they took great delight in showing off their new found skills. We also enjoyed a fabulous walk with amazing scenery and wildlife. Only wish we could have stayed longer than one night.

“Totally Overpriced!!”

My partner and I took my mother back to the island of her youth as a trip down memory lane before she is too ill to travel. She lived in both Raasay House, "The Big House", now sadly burned down and Borodale House aka The Isle of Raasay House Hotel. To say we were all disappointed would be an understatement. Value for money it is not!!! The rooms are rundown, although quite clean, but with none of the facilities that a hotel that charges £85 per night has. Basic accomodation to say the least. The evening meals were overpriced, service very poor, although the staff are helpful they have no obvious talent for hotel work. A little training would go a long way!!! Not to be too negative, the food was cooked and presented well but the menu and prices changed 3 times during our 3 day stay.
The location is fantastic and Raasay has a lot to offer but this hotel needs dragging into the 21st century by people who know how to run a hotel!!
PS this hotel is now called The Borodale House Hotel!!!

“A superb location on a wonderful island, unfortunately ....”

We spent 3 nights in September 2007 in the hotel. The rooms were basic but clean. Staff were very friendly. The meals were ok, although for 2 of our 3 mornings the breakfast was a hot buffet (but it was barely warm) The evening meals on the Friday and Saturday were good and there was an excellent choice of starter and main, however the desserts were the same all 3 nights, limited and from the chill cabinet in the bar. The 3rd night, when a lot of the residents had left, the main was down to a choice of vegetarian or pork. The lounge had empty glasses lying around on tables for hours on end. It was a pleasant stay but we felt the place needed tidying up.

  • Liked — Location, and it was the only hotel on the island. Friendly staff
  • Disliked — Average food. Inconsistency in menu. Untidyness

“Clean, comfortable, helpful staff and great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2007

We stayed one night at the hotel during a walking tour for a short walking tour of Raasay, which is an amazing island -- a microcosm of both Highland history and geology.

The hotel is nicely situated for exploring the island and has great views across to Skye. The hotel itself is architetcurally a rather unfortunate conversion of a Victorian house, but inside it is very pleasant. The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. The cooking is good and unpretentious.

The best part is the helpfulness of the staff. The owner gave us great advice about walks and what to see on the island, and the manager took time out to drive us a few miles up the island to retrieve our car from a not-quite-circular walk.

It was also great value for money. It's easy to spend three times what we paid and not get nearly as much.

You don't have much of a choice of hotels on Raasay. Grande luxe this is not, but I'd seriously consider this hotel no matter where it was.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable, good value and great staff
  • Disliked — House wine could be improved (stick to the whiskey)
