“Like staying in a prison”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

Not a pleasant place to spend much time. Bare breeze block walls and cramped rooms make it feel somewhat like a prison (not helped by the infuriating amount of times you have to swipe a security card). Not a great nights kip to be had either - with squeaky bunks, terrible mattresses and bedding of questionable cleanliness. It was also the only hostel on our trip which charged us to leave our bags the day after checkout. The staff member (presumed manager) was quick to tell us how much of a favour he was doing us in this matter and how much of a hassle it was to them. The 4 other hostels we asked didn't seem to have a problem!

On the upside, the kitchen/dining area is decent with brilliant views of the Cuillins, the showers were good and the member of staff on arrival was helpful.

The Conclusion: Portree Independent Hostel is 30 seconds away. It's the same price and infinitely nicer. Stay there.

“We didn't stay here becaue the staff was so rude.”

We were caught unexpectedly in Portree for two days, unable to leave because we were cycling and there were 48 hours of gale-force winds. Tourist information managed to find us an excellent B&B for the first night, but it was fully booked for the second, so we went into town to ask around.

We arrived at the hostel and rang the bell twice, waiting about 10 minutes before anyone answered. A very angry man eventually came and started shouting at us. He said the hostel was full that night. We said we knew that and had a place to stay, but were wondering about the next night. He then exploded - sweeping the phone and everything off the reception desk and slamming down the reception shutters. There was absolutely no reason for him to be so rude. We left and found a different B&B instead. The next morning we met another couple who had encountered the same man and the same response. I'd sooner sleep on a park bench than stay there.

“One of the worst hostels”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

This was one of the worst hostels I ever slept in. From outside it looked new, but the matresses were very old and I felt the coil springs.
The dormitories are cramped with beds. There's no place for luggage or clothes. Due to heavy rains a lot of scottish hostels have drying rooms for wet clothes and shoes, this hostel hasn't any. The kitchen is small and not very well equipped. There are loudspeakers in the kitchen, common room and even the staircase, where you have to hear a noisy radiostation all the day - if you want to hear it or not.
This hostel has keys like credit cards. You must use them whenever you want to go to another room, to the toilet etc. And every day my card suddenly stopped working, so I had to ring the warden. When I asked two other guests about this and they had the same experience.

“100% satisfied”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2010

We booked 2nights in a 4-beds dorm and they provided us a private room because no one occupied it! Great view from common room and nice staff as well.

Compared with another hostel in Portree: Independent hostel. Definitely recommend this one
