“Clean rooms and a very friendly owner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

I can´t understand all the bad ratings.
- We stayed in two rooms in the upper building for 5 nights. The rooms are clean and get cleaned every day during the stay.
- The TV works good. Only the volume is to loud and I always had a bad feeling annoying neighbors, but nobody took care so either the walls are thick enough or they doesn´t mentioned.
- The location is good and you are in the center of Portree. The Hotel have a parking lot with space for about five cars. The public parking lot of the city is only 2 minutes away.
- The owner is very friendly and explained us everything about the island and gave us a lot of tips. He also borrowed us a map of trails for hiking.
- The windows have a sunblind and a curtain so i don´t understand a comment about thin curtains. If you want it dark you can have it.

So at a second visit of Portree this hotel would be my choice again.

“Adequate for a short stay of young people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

I've been staying at the hostel for 2 nights. For the price i paid (16 pounds a night), i got a clean room (4 beds), a clean kitchen and dinner room, a friendly host, shower and toilets shared with all others but still clean.
I would advise not to book this hostel if you are spending the whole week in Portree but if you just wanna a clean place to stay for night and not too expensive that's where to go. If you're used to go on youth summer camp this is just for you.
Finally it couldn't be much closer to the city center.

“gave our room away”

Made a reservation (for 2 nights) for this place, followed host's instructions. Offered my card to hold the room. They don't take cards and said to call if we'd be after six. I called - no answer, left a message. Get to hotel - room has been given away. Was especially difficult to find given dancing festival going on. Poor service, I think this place got some attention after being included in Rick Steves for its value but since then they have upped their prices to be more competitive with surrounding places but still do not include breakfast. And, as you can see, service is not a priorty - just getting money is their bottom line. Beware!

“worst place i have ever stayed. ***Do Not Stay Here****”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

Had the great pleasure of spending a couple of days on the beautiful isle of skye. This isle has some of most amazing landscape and a must for all hill walkers.

However if you are traveling please avoid this "dump" at all cost. The rooms were advertised at 25 pound per person. However the manager demanded 55 pound for the room and another £2.50 for using the credit card.

The room could be compared to a prison cell. It contained a small double bed with a matress the was so lumpy that i had to sleep at the oppposite end of the bed. The curtains were so light that may as well not have being there. The room was filled with light at 5.30 am.

The room had tv that did not work ( not good during the world cup) and a hairr dryer that did not work. The only positive thing about this place was the shower, however make sure you bring towels because you only get one and there no fresh towels are available.

Check out is at 9.30 am and if you are late the rude manager will coming knocking on the door telling you have "5 mins or else he is coming in himself.

But the one good thing about the early check out is you get to leave this place early.

Please do not put you of visiting the north of scotland just avoid this place and you will have a great holiday

“More like Boot Camp than Holiday Accommodation.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2008

Our reason for visiting Portree was to spend time with friends who were spending an extended vacation in the town so we met up with them before we went to Bay View House. They already knew where to find it and were with us when we went to introduce ourselves to the owner.

Immediately he saw there were four of us he became very agitated and aggressive. He insisted that our friends must stand on the edge of the car park and could not enter his garden because his insurance would not permit them to do so. He then took us up the external steps and into the building at the top, where our room was located.

The room had more in common with a cell than a holiday accommodation, but it was clean and we were only staying for three nights so we accepted it.

The owner then proceeded to lecture us on why our friends must not come anywhere near his establishment. Apparently, previous guests had allowed their friends to use the bathroom and he did not want this to happen again. We assured him that our friends had much more comfortable accommodation close by and would not even consider using his bathroom, but he was not convinced.

He then pointed out at great length the importance of locking all three doors leading to our room every time we went out.

Finally, he demanded to be paid in cash there and then. Our money was in our car which was in his car park so he rushed off down to his office accompanied by my husband and left me to lock all three doors. I was so concerned about getting all the doors locked that I missed my footing on the top outside step and fell down the top flight. Fortunately, I did not break any bones but I could not bear my weight on my left ankle and it took me some time to get down the remaining steps and into the office. He was not at all concerned by the fact I could no longer walk and when I mentioned that I had fallen down he said I should have held onto the rail.

Other rules of the establishment include:
1. Guests must be out of their rooms by 10a.m. every day to allow for cleaning. If guests do not co-operate the rooms will be cleaned around them.

2. Rooms to be vacated at 9a.m. on the morning of departure. (He was waiting outside our room at 9a.m to "assist" with our bags).

3. Cars must be parked exactly in accordance with his precise instructions.

Our visit was in June. I am writing this in September and my ankle which was badly sprained has only just recovered.

  • Liked — Central location and views from garden had we been allowed to enjoy them.
  • Disliked — Aggressive attitude of manager/owner
