“More of a hostel maybe?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Stayed here with work. Great location right in the centre of town but not much else in it's favour. Room floor sloped so much my hairspray rolled from one side and bounced off the other. Wardrobe was stick of wood hung above the tv - which despite asking twice to be fixed never worked whilst we were there. Neither did the one in my colleagues room. Strong smell of smoke from rooms in corridor. Food really not edible and service throughout was less than enthusiastic. Shame, as this could be a cracking wee place with some investment and customer service training.

“Cleanish stay, better than the tourist trap priced alternatives”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

First of all, Portree is gorgeous. I love the mountains. Your close to alot of historic sites and some very unique mountains just a few minutes outside of Portree.Eilean Donan Castle is just a 45 minute bus ride away.

Oh right the hotel. The hotel was exactly what you paid for. Nothing is in the room. Nothing, Just a bed. The shower sprays water and the roof does not leak. The room was clean enough that I could sleep there. Now normally, this hotel would be ranked lower but their pricing and the reasonable quality of the hotel is just fine.

- 30 pounds a night? Check.
- Right next to buses and restaurants? Check
- Friendly staff? Check

If you look up BnBs and local hotels, the BnBs here take the cake. The tourist trap that is Portree would teach Hawaii a thing or two about how to scam the local bewildered tourist. There are rooms in isolated homes that are in the 400 pounds a night range and higher for one person! It's a bedroom in someones house, for that much. For that much money you could go pay a doctor and get your brain fixed so you could know better the next time you find yourself somewhere like this.

Portree has horrible food, horrible. This is the capital of everything you ever heard was wrong about Scotland or Europe in general. I stayed here for 3 nights and ate at all the horrible restaurants. There is also some racism with the younger people here but it's just nervousness as to how to interact with people properly. This place is kinda isolated and a bit of a time warp, your safe.

“Sweet...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

The location is great for someone who is traveling by bus and walking! The staff from the front desk to the kitchen were great. I was giving special treatment by management, because the people who own and run are there, and make sure you are taken care of. The food was great, at any time of day. You can feel the history when you walk in the door.

“Playing in Portree”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

We stayed here as part of a group. It didn't have a lift (elevator), so was a bit difficult for our older, less mobile travelers and people with heavy luggage. Aside from that, the rooms were fine -- clean and had lots of character. Had my best two nights of sleep on our trip at the Portree Hotel. The staff was wonderful, despite the fact that our trip coordinator canceled out of having evening meals there. My husband and I ate in their restaurant and had no complaints, and breakfasts there were great. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Ask for a first floor room if you have trouble with stairs or have heavy luggage.

“Best welcome Effecient patient helpful and Good Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

Many hotels in Skye need a lick of paint and clearly suffer from neglect. Portree deserves credit. Yes it’s an old hotel but the owners are spending money and I think are concerned for their guests and try hard, it shows. Give me service and a willingness to please over appearances any day. The Hotel was after all built in the e1800's.

The best bit wqas a nice friendly welcome. No nonsense but I find you get what you put in when you need help and Portree staff did everything they could to make a bad day for us better. With the remnants of Hurricane Katie blowing in full swing our Malaig Ferry cancelled at short notice by the Gods of Cal Mac, the then inevitable horrendous detour via the bridge, we were not feeling our best. But every member of the Portree staff from Owner to the receptionists, guys shifting the bags waiters’ waitress, every one understood we had had an awful day and tried to make it better for us.

Our tour party of 30 sprightly yet very demanding Senior Canadians needed every help and consideration and they got it. Nothing was too much trouble for Portree Hotel staff made us feel welcome and wanted. Best of all they rose to the challenge of demanding customer and went the extra mile. The clients loved it so a big thumbs up. Sure the hotel had seen better days but they are investing and clearly do seem to care. I find you get what you put in be reasonable positive and pleasant and Portree will pay you back with dividends. Just remember the hotel has some way to go but clearly the owners are trying to get there. I recommend it.

Room Tip: Listen guys it an oiold hotel but with refurbishe bathrooms clean tidy warm and a reasonable standar...
