“Stay wherever you want, but eat at Saucy Mary's!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

The five stars for this review is actually for the food at the pub ... we stayed at the MacBackpacker hostel next door ... but I had to put this out because the food at Saucy Mary's was honestly the best food I've had in my three trips to Scotland.

I try to taste the haggis everywhere, and this was definitely the best. The venison steak I had was tender and out-of-this-world delicious. Other people in my party had the chicken, the venison sausage, the vegetarian shepard's pie, the fish and chips and several of the deserts ... and all agreed every item was fabulous. Service was fast and very friendly.

“Stay at the Skye Backpackers next door instead.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

Stay at the Skye Backpackers next door instead. This hostel has a pub downstairs which is very noisy until the wee hours. You will get very little sleep. Staff were gruff and unhelpful. Hostel was only passably clean, cold and generally sub-par for the price.

“Standard hostel - absolutely fine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

Saucy Mary's is a very good hostel. The dorms are 4 bunks and a sink. The place is clean, beds are comfy and the showers are hot. It's a good hostel - nothing to complain about and nothing to shout about! If you were in a group of 4 this is great as you can have a room to yourselves. They also have private twins but I'm not sure how much those are.

There is a bar and restaurant attached - the food in the restaurant is very good (£10 and under for mains) and the bar is lively, with regular live bands. Kyleakin is a nice spot, overlooking the water

Hot tip - watch out for the midges! Make sure you take some Deet and cover up in the evenings or you will regret it!!!!

“Lovely spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2010

Travelling with 3 other friends meant we got a 4 bed room to ourselves. Toliet and shower was situated just outside door so was convient and didn't seem to be used by any of the other guests. Although the floorboards at bottom of ground floor stairs were sodden and smelt a bit funny, the room itself was clean, didn't smell and had it's own sink. Bar downstairs was nice as was the bar/restuarant across the road - with a nice view of the bridge and castle. Bar had live music but didn't really hear it in room on top floor and was stopped around midnight so a good night sleep was had by all.

“alright for a night's stay..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2010

The thing that bought this hostel down was the owner. I stayed for one night as part of a tour, and found him to be very rude, and generally uninterested in making people's stay a pleasant one. A shame, because every other aspect of the hostel was ok.

Check in was a nightmare, although hopefully you should have better luck if travelling by yourself. Can't complain about the rooms, they were comfortable enough and clean. Bathrooms were clean also, and relatively good shower.
The pub downstairs served great food, would definitely recommend it, as there's not much else around to choose from. Drinks were reasonable enough and the live entertainment was good.
So stay out of the owners way and you should enjoy yourselves fine :)
Oh and also- only one key card assigned per room, even if you don't know the other people in your room! Not a big fan of that, but chances are, your roomies will be hanging in the pub as well, as there's nowhere else to go at night lol.

It is nice to see all the positive feedback from happy customers. But, because we know we don't get it right all of the time, in response to any negative comments, here are some of the improvements we have made to our service:

Check in - Any problems with checking in have usually arisen as a result of an influx of people checking in at the same time and particularly outside of normal checking in hours. Our systems have been improved to streamline this process for our guests. Our guests are given 1 card per room as standard. However, you can have more than one if requested.

Payment - Credit card charges are no longer being made on accommodation transactions unless they are combined with a cashback facility. We do not over-charge, although deposits are non-refundable.

Maintenance/equipment - Where a shower or anything else needs fixing during use, this is dealt with promptly as long as we are made aware of it. The hostel kitchens have just been restocked with sufficient levels of plates and cutlery. Unfortunately, a small minority of guests take cutlery with them when they leave, which has occasionally (along with breakages to plates) occurred faster than we have been able to keep up with.

Rooms - The number of rooms directly above the bar has been reduced, and the rooms to the back of the kitchen area are now staff only. Older mattresses are in the process of being replaced.

Many thanks to everybody who has taken the time to leave feedback - good and bad.
